I just picked up a 79 XS650 that I am planning on hardtailing and building a bobber out of it. Everything on the bike is great and it only has 12000 miles on it. The problem is: The kickstarter does not engage unless you kick it really fast first. What could be causing this? The kickstart lever just goes all the way down with no resistance. If you swing it really fast it will catch.

i did that once to mine. got oil? i had to open the case and put the gear thingy in the right way
pop the cover off and make sure that the kick start spring is pre loaded. Might want to get a gasket as well just encase the other one isnt good. Also if you havent already, get a repair manual or there is one online for free, the link is somewhere around here, very helpful.
