Kowalski Revisited: The Mayor and The Blenheim Bridge

Careful.....don't give Pete an opening. He'll remind you that she's just an old lady now. Max Buzzkill!

Yup, we all get old, Bob.
I put an image of you into an on-line "aging program", and it tells us that you are going to look like this eventually:

With every story, there comes the inevitable Final Chapter.

Here is my introduction to Steven Kowalski, “The Mayor”.

http://www.xs650.com/threads/kowalski.50092/

I’ve been checking in at Kowalski’s place (“Asshole’s Garage”) every time I travelled to the Catskill Mountains this year. The place was always closed.

The guy at the ice cream stand said that all he knew was that The Mayor of North Blenheim had been through a “rough patch”, recently.

When I came by yesterday it was the same, closed and padlocked, but things really did not look good.

Although inside, Kowalski's "stuff" was undisturbed.

Please play the song, Gregg.

So, I drove up the street to the post office, which had just closed. A New York State Trooper parked there had no helpful update on Kowalski

But I came across Sheri, who was walking home with a Certified Mail package in her arms. She smiled,

...and said that she hasn't seen Steven in months. Her demeanor changed to a sad expression, "He had been real sick. Really doesn't look good, honestly," she said.
So, I drove in the other direction to the town DPW where Kowalski's son is the supervisor.

…where I found a town worker leaning against his pickup truck.

I was told that The Mayor had gotten very sick last Fall, and he was eventually taken to a local nursing facility. After being there for months with no improvement, he insisted on going home.

It was only days before he stopped responding to calls, and his son eventually went over to find his Dad.

Kowalski wanted to be on dry land when he was taken.

Floating Bridge
Gregg Allman
Well, I never will forget that floatin' bridge
Well, I never will forget that floatin' bridge
Well, I never will forget that ol' floatin' bridge
Tell me, five minutes underwater when I was hid
When I was goin' down I throwed up my hands
Yeah, when I was goin' down I throwed up my hands
Now, when I was goin' down I throwed up my hands
Lord, please, please take me on dry land
Now, they carried me out the water an' they laid me on the bank
Now, they carried me out the water an' they laid me on the bank
They carried me out the water, they laid me on the bank
About a gallon of muddy water I had drank
Now, they dried me off an' they laid me on the bed
Now, they dried me off an' they laid me on the bed
Now, they dried me off, they laid me on the bed
Don't like muddy water runnin' through my head
Now, my mother often taught me, don't you be no bum
But my mother often taught me, don't you be no bum
But my mother often taught me, son, don't you be no bum
Go somewhere settle down find you someone
Now, the people standin' on the bridge was screamin' an' cryin'
Well, the people on the bridge was screamin' an' cryin'
Now, the people on the bridge was standin' screamin' an' cryin'
Lord, I thought sure that I was dyin'
Well, I never will forget that floatin' bridge
Well, I never will forget that floatin' bridge
I never will forget that ol' floatin' bridge
Tell me, five minutes underwater when I was hid
Tell me, five minutes underwater when I was hid

Aww hell Jeff. You had to go and make me misty eyed with that one. Kowalski was one of my all time favorite stories here on this forum. I love the way you go to these small town places and tell people’s stories. I love the history and forgotten little towns. I think we knew Kowalski was getting near the end of the trail.
Thank you for sharing his story and for closing this last chapter of the Kowalski story, I will remember him because you brought him to life for us.
You’ve gotta keep this kind of writing coming!

Hey, btw.....is that garage for sale? Maybe you could be the new Mayor. :)
