Hey folks,
It might be bad news for my 80. Do these look like filings? If so how should I proceed. The engine has about 7000mi. Top end rebuild and 700cc pistons by Gary Hoos at 4500 miles. Input welcome.

Are you referring to the fuzz on the magnet?

Hope that's not Madness or I'll fell bad.:(
No, just a Special I bought long ago. (cheap)
There were chunks of piston out in the air filter. LOL

I began to think things might be ugly inside when I could see through from the intake to the exhaust.

That and the crank was locked up.

Yes, what you've found is typical and normal. As your pic also shows, you'll often find a few little black bits and/or a few small metal chips. This is an old engine design and a bit crude inside. The best way I'd describe it is it runs a bit "dirty". The little black bits are rubber and my theory is they come from the rubber damper ring attached to the #4 starter gear. This ring gets old, hard, and begins breaking down. Here's a particularly bad one .....

Speaking of that starter gear...I have replaced the gear with a mikes one, also used an NOS spring clip per the forum, moved the clip to the correct notch in the cas and tested the pull with a scale and got 7lbs but am still having bad grinding during and for a few seconds after I push the electric start. Is there something else I should be looking at....
