Hi everyone, so I finally was able to get a hole of a bore gauge and micrometer to measure my cylinder/pistons. Cylinder is in spec and almost perfectly round.
Pistons however, not so much. pistons are about 0.015" sloppy...
So I'm going to replace the pistons and rings and get her back up and running. I've found some single NOS pistons on ebay for a little more expensive than the mikesXS pistons. I've also found a kit from JAPAN, with pistons and rings for quite a bit less.
Anyone have experience with aftermarket pistons in these bikes? Most aftermarket products are pretty good quality now, but I'd like some opinions.
I can get the piston/ring kit from Japan for 134$ canadian http://www.ebay.ca/itm/74-81-YAMAHA-XS650-STANDARD-SIZE-PISTONS-SET-2-PISTONS-447-TYPE-10-XS650PS/141952967438?_trksid=p2050601.c100085.m2372&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140211132617%26meid%3De4f0b1fe012a4cab8a05fa9cc72df830%26pid%3D100085%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D381529162747%26clkid%3D4590868447575093297&_qi=RTM2247627

Mikes XS pistons for 150$ and rings for 86$

or NOS pistons for around 240$ and rings for 68$

I think its clear that between the mikes rings and OEM ones I would definately get the OEM.

But can anyone speak for the quality of MikesXS pistons?

thanks!

The aftermarket piston and rings on EBAY are the same as Mikes sell. I have use close to 25 sets now both stock bore and 706 kit . I have a order in right now for 6 sets. You get them in about 2 weeks because they are coming from overseas. I have these pistons in more than 10 XS650 and also some CB750 kits that they also make and some bikes have been running since 2009 with no problems.

Thank you for the response! This is Really good to hear. As it will save me quite a bit of cash. I Assume you are using the rings from the kit as well?

They have a couple kits so look good before you order on there site.
They have a
706 kit with rings and gasket foe $120
1 mm over bore pistons and rings for $80.00
STOCK bore piston and rings for $80.00
When I buy I always buy a extra set of rings just to have same shipping cost

Order from Cruzing Image without a second thought. My recent order (second over set) was delivered to me in S. Ontario in about 10 days, no hassles with import duties, deliveries or anything. Chinese appearing corporate name will show up on Paypal. All good.

Yup the Japanese kits are good. My cylinder boring guy says the liners are getting pretty thin with the 706 kits. He has to take several thinner cuts to keep the liners from distorting where they are unsupported below the cylinders.

although I have rik rings in two bikes, and broke in fast and good, I must say if you can gt oem, get it. mike sells rik with the kits. atleast they did 7 years ago when I did my 680 cc650.

I saw those... ok quality eh?

I'm using second over pistons from cruisinimage. They were within 0.1g and .0002" of each other. Rings were in spec on gap, have a few hundred miles on them now with no issues. Rings seated fast, no smoke, no noises, I can say I would buy from them again without second thought.
