Hi. I just bought a 79 650 Special. It hasn't run since 1984ish. I've removed the tank, petcocks, and carbs. Very crusty so far. I am new to this bike but I have some experience with old stuff. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in the future. I think forums like this are extremely valuable and I look forward to picking your brains and possibly providing some helpful insights as I bring this cool bike back to life.

Clean and inspect. And then clean and inspect.
If it’s upside down, I apologize. I’ll figure it out.

Hi bartmead and welcome,
all manner of advice available here.
Ignore those who advocate hard-tailing and/or swapping ignition or charging systems and you'll be fine.

as someone who has swapped both, here’s my response:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

do whatcha want![/QUOTE]

Hi buzz,
although your pictograph's meaning escapes me you are absolutely correct. A rider's bike is theirs to modify as they wish.
BUT
When your hardtail gives you slipped discs and your ersatz electrics leave you pushing in the dark don't come whining to me about it.

Ooof! That’s a lot of corrosion in there! Be very careful when removing the float hinge pins. Those posts can be fragile.

Hi Mailman,
what has always worked for me to remove the float pivot pins is one hit on the end with a spring-loaded centerpunch,
pops the pin out just enough to grip with a pair of pliers and pull.
