Hey guys,

Back in 1978 I bought my first New street bike, a 650 Special. Sold it a couple of years later to buy a GL1000, and while I loved the Wing, I always regretted selling the Yami. Last year I was in Australia, and went to the fantastic Motorcycle Museum there, and saw about 10 XS 650's. I came home to Toronto and bought a couple of them in pieces. A project someone got tired of. So now I plan to build one as close to stock as I can, and build one safe, but in as is condition. I'm here to get answers, and give as many as I can.

Hi Scout, welcome to the forum. You've come to the right place for help with rebuilding your XSs. What years are the bikes you have? Should be able to work out from the frame and engine numbers - have a look in the Tech section, here: http://www.xs650.com/threads/42

Plus photos, did anybody mention pictures?

Welcome Scout.

You will find more information and help here than any other place. Many years of experience among the group. As Bosco said, I am also just down the road from you if you need anything. Don't be afraid to ask.

Welcome Scout this is the go to place and the go to people
About 2 years ago I stumbled onto this site and there is SO much info here
If you want to hit the WoW factor just look in the tech section
Ask questions you'll get answers If you need parts ask if someone here doesn't have them they will steer you in the right direction
I must have 30-40 pages bookmarked just for specific info I'll need in the future
And if your semi bored check out the The Lounge section
Anyway I'm done yappin time to find a bucket some beer and some snow and out to garage I go

Hello Joe and welcome form Virginia. Good luck on the build and of course, please start a thread to cover it all. I won't speak for others, but I need to see the progress; motorcycle porn is awesome. I get in trouble looking at other porn...

The good thing about those 2 models, although one s a special and the other a standard, is that either can be made to look like the other using most parts. The 74 has 34mm forks and the 78 has 35mm forks, but both of the triple tree stems are a straight fit into the frame head.

Make sure the 74 is a 74. Between the 73 and 74 there are major changes to the frame so that earlier 70-73 parts will not interchange with 74 frames and the motors have major internal differences
