Hi folks! I just brought home a XS from '80. Its a Standard with two disc brakes. The problem is that the PO has (maybe) broken the crankshaft end where the rotor sits.

His story: The woodruff key was loose and broken the slot the woodruff key sits in. And maybe the crankshaft end. It got lines in it and a shop has told him it needs a new crankshaft.

My idea (and hope) is that its only broken for the stock charging system, but not broken if I use Hughs PMA.

Can anybody (or Hugh) tell me if it will work with a PMA or do I need to split the cases and change the crankshaft? If its broken I may want to try to build a rephased engine.

I hope the pictures gives an idea of whats possible to do.

Thank in advance!

Don't quote me on this, but I THINK hugh's PMA goes on without the need for a woodruf key. Wait until someone else confirms this before you take my word for it!!

Very clean and nice looking bike though!!!

Yes, I have hughs PMA for my XS650D, and that why I hoped it would work without changing the crank, but I like to know if the crank end is too messed up for the PMA flywheel?

Other than the key slot being a bit buggered, the rest seems ok to me. Just feel it with your fingers and see if the edges are a bit raised or not. If they are, just file them down a bit.

either pma or stock rotor with careful clean up of the woodruff key edges as mentioned above. use very fine paper on the rest of the taper like 1000 grit. If you use the stock rotor put the woodruff key in it anyway and make a new TDC mark after you have tightened the nut. Fish that loose washer out from behind the gasket.
Check that the nut won't strip out on the shaft threads they look rather worn.
At the bottom of the crankcase there is a boss that should have a pin that keeps the stock stator aligned. Probably not needed on a PMA setup.
