This is non xs 650 topic. I have a 2004 Yamaha Roadstar 1700. Well got up early to take a nice coastal ride but was cut short. On my way out of town glanced at my voltmeter and saw 12.3v. Turned around and got home. Went thru this test sequence and found stator grounded. Readings are same grounded as 3 readings on each pin not grounded. Can someone confirm what I am seeing is correct that stator is grounded and will need replacing? Got a fully charged battery 3000rpm holds around 12.3 or so. Getting power to reg/rec all connections been cleaned. Yamaha service manual goes thru sequence but does not go thru grounding stator. Just want to make sure what I am reading is correct. Grounded stator is no good. thanks JC

Yup... grounded stator is bad.

It sure was Pete. But I did take the XS for a 120kms ride which that one too was cut short. Going down a bumpy section of one of my regular go to backroads and I heard a clunk.....dang electrics door opened (side door drops down). The bolt holding it shut got loose and wiggled out. I wasn't too far from home was sorta doing a figure 8 loop and Moncton being in the center and was my way to the second loop. Took a right towards magnetic hill and once in a while had to push the wiring and fuse box back in to not fall out. Got her home and started trouble shooting my Roadstar. :(:(:( Just glad I made it home on both rides.

Stator on a minimum 8 week backorder from Yamaha and $469 bucks Canadian (about $1.35 US :laugh2:). Found a new one in box on Fleabay for $288 shipped!!! :):) only gonna be here in 2 or 3 weeks bummer :(:( oh well guess I'm gonna be XS'n it for a few weeks. Gonna put the miles on er now!! :bike:
