Starting my build, planning on having Hugh do a rephase for me......question, Whats the best sounding exhaust? Single open? Dual with mufflers? 2 into one? I love the way they sound rephased and believe loud pipes save lives, so LOUD is good. I know everyone has an opinion and they all differ, but lets hear what ya'all think! GO!

Stock. With air boxes. Hard tailed with glass packs and pods. Heavy jetting with open pipes. I have three runners, and they match the way they sound. If your doing a restore--stock pipes. Hardtail--raspy and loud. Cafe--calm at criusing, bark at a flick of the wrist.
What style are you shooting for?

I recall some folks in here advising against 2-into-1 on rephased.
Small diameter stuff will get you the 'rasp'.
Large diameter stuff will get you the 'throat'...

As long as you know how to tune carbs, the options are endless.
Don't know how to tune carbs and you'll have a turd on your hands. Loud and flat.

Yo Momma's are my favorite for sound though.

    Hi 'demon,
if you still have the stock exhaust, if it's in good shape and if it'll still fit the frame after it's been modified
(Yeah, three "ifs" and you'll need all of them) what works to make a pleasingly loud exhaust noise and
costs nothing (dunno about you but I'd be strapped for cash after buying a rephase ) is to shove a pointy
steel bar up each muffler and pound the end of the bar with a club hammer until the muffler's inner baffle is opened.

Thats about how my chop sounds . I was idleing it one day and my mother said it wasnt that loud. I grabbed a hand full of throttle and she nearly jumped out of her skin..
Imo, thats how a chop should sound. Now my 71 on the other hand has a clean stock exhaust, and the sound fits the bike perfectly. Match the sound to the look.

    jamesgs4 fuck this, let's ride!

2 into 1 exhaust always end up sounding like a dirtbike, really buzzy.

Loud pipes don't save lives, they just piss off the neighbors who go to the town council and gets stricter noise ordinances enacted. That just makes everyone's life just a bit harder.

    Hi Leo,
yes, loud pipes do trigger the negative responses you mention AND they also save lives.
It seems I'm as unaware of my surroundings as any other car driver and if I hadn't heard a sound like a Bofors gun as I prepared to pull out around a slow moving semi I'd have sideswiped that Harley for sure.

The louder pipes seem to deter wildlife better ime. I've passed deer who stay on the shoulder with the specials stock pipes, with the louder slash cuts or turn outs they always run back to the woods or at least away from the road. I'm not sure people looking at their phone while driving are aware of the extra noise.

    Stolen from the interwebs.

In talking about using a cell phone while driving, Dr. Steven Yantis, a professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, had this to say:

“Directing attention to listening effectively ‘turns down the volume’ on input to the visual parts of the brain. The evidence we have right now strongly suggests that attention is strictly limited — a zero-sum game. When attention is deployed to one modality (say, talking on a cell phone) it necessarily extracts a cost on another modality (say, the visual task of driving).”

    Hi WER,
I'm all in favor of cops ticketing car drivers for using cell phones but if ol' doc Yantis is right they should also be ticketing car drivers who have a SWMBO yakking in their ear'ole &/or have a backseat full of squabbling kids.

    Distraction is distraction.

  16. Loud pipes wont save your life but will make you deaf. I like the sound of the commando system mikes sells.

I have a 122mile commute. I suspect drinking coffee is a distraction? I often stop at mac and dons' steak house on the way home. Tired and full of carbs, i always give wide birth to bikes, bur sometimes they realy do come out of nowhere.

I have commando pipes on my bike right now. The po cut off the tapered end and drilled out the holes. It sounds really good and no loss in performance. I'll get a video when I can.
