Boyer and Pamco Ignition

Don't SEE it on yours, but that LOOKs like the coil from Mikes XS, if it's the one I'm thinking of the spade terminals on the end are extremely fragile. The primary winding is very thin and can come loose from the terminals.

Pics of the PAMCO plate. The old one on the bench the new one installed on the engine.
They appear to be the same to me.

PAMCO products are only available from www.yamahaxs650.com . We no longer sell the XS650 products through distributors.
Just giving a quick update on where my story ended up.

Mikes XS ended up taking my E advancer and ignition plate back. They tested it, found the same result I did, then sent me an "updated version they just happened to have". When I received it, it turned out to be the latest PAMCO ignition with the integrated advancer on the ignition plate. Funny thing, Mikes XS does not have this part on their website... My guess is they bought it from PAMCO to send to me.

Anyways, with the new unit, it fired right up and didn't even have to adjust the ignition plate. It was perfect. Thank you for helping me figure it out.

My warning to anyone looking to get electronic ignition: GO STRAIGHT TO PAMCO. I wish I would have...

Hoping someone smarter than me will be able to help me out!! I bought my first XS 650 last year not running but 85% complete.
The previous owner installed the pamco Eadvancer and what appears to be the original style hall effect sensor.
I was able to get the bike running and enjoy it for a short time before is quit charging. Replaced the rectifier and fixed that issue but
shortly after I lost spark. I have read tons of threads but still cant figure it out. Tried the throw parts at it method but to no avail!
I have a 1981 however I believe the motor is out of a 1979 engine code 2F0-171158.

I have run through the suggested test and all readings are within spec for the coil and pamco:

Testing the coil:
1;
Using the lowest scale on the meter, measure the resistance between the primary terminals with the wires removed. Should read from 2.5 to 4.5 Ohms. WITHIN SPEC
2; Using the highest scale on the meter, measure between one of the primary terminals and the center core of the coil. Should be infinite resistance. (open) WITHIN SPEC
3; Measure between one of the primary terminals and one of the plug wire terminals. Should be infinite resistance. (open circuit) WITHIN SPEC
4; Measure between one of the plug wire terminals and the core of the coil. Should be infinite resistance (open circuit) WITHIN SPEC
5; Measure from one plug terminal to the other. Should be 15,000 to 20,000 Ohms WITHIN SPEC

Testing the PAMCO
1,
Use a voltmeter and check for battery voltage on each of the red/white wires with the key and kill switch are turned on. WITHIN SPEC
2, The dual output coil has to have both spark plug wires connected to a spark plug at all times. CHECK
3, To test for spark, connect one of the spark plug wires to a spark plug that is grounded to the engine. Check/ NO SPARK

Out of frustration I purchased a new coil and Eadvancer from PamcoPete but no change.
Iam wondering if the Hall Effect sensor could have failed but can not find the specs to test it.....Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks is advance!!!

EDIT: After a closer look at Pamcos website i noticed my hall effect looks different...maybe an old version maybe a rip off version? The board says Pamco. Anyhow I attached a picture with the readings I took.

Sorry I couldn't find the pics of the mikesXS unit, your unit does not look like the genuine pamco pics that I found.

That's all I got....

Thanks, it looks a lot like the mikes XS picture. I couldn’t find one that looked identical to it either. Odd it actually says PAMCO on the board. Now I’m wondering if the blue e advancer i bought off Pete’s website is compatible with the Hall effect sensor on my bike. May need to pony up and buy the sensor as well.

650Skull thanks for the advice. I sent him a PM. Hopefully he can shed some light on my issue. Iam about half tempted to just order a new Hall effect sensor from Pete’s website so i will know exactly what kind of equipment i am running. Do you know if it matters which of Pete’s Hall effect sensors i order? I think i saw 3 options on his site.
Thank you

I think the original Pamco can be used with the separate e-advance...........Just have to have the 60 degree magnet plate...........

Email Pete would be the best option and discuss your situation.

I sent Pete an email. Hopefully he will be able to get back to me sooner than later. This nice weather has me wanting to ride!! Not to mention looking at the bike on the lift has me spending money lol ordered the PMA charging system today. Already working on it so might as well upgrade, right?

Pete Barry Toy here. Sent away to get a 277 ignition system from you. I have not gotten any parts yet. Sent away around the 4th of April. Please help thanks Barry

which is another reason why I always recommend the Boyer Bransden system plus it is cheaper , would appear to be more reliable has excellent technical backup and support with a technician at the end of the phone every day.

Great guys at British Cycle Supply! I bought a few things off of them before and they have sales once in a while. I would recommend for sure. They also have a warehouse the east coast of the USA in Limestone Maine. Not too far across the NB border. Both of their warehouses are about 3 and a half hours away from my place. J-C

@peanut After 3 weeks without a response to my multiple emails to PamcoPete i took your advice and ordered the Boyer. Quick response to every email, quick shipping and my bike runs again! Now to figure out what nonsense the previous owner did with the jetting!

excellent news ...glad your bike is running again .
I really don't understand the situation with Petes products ?............There are always owners on here trying to get help with Petes products and often waiting weeks for a reply . There seems to be a lot of copies around on the net also so you wouldn't be sure what you were buying unless you order directly from Pete.
Therein lies the problem . getting hold of him !

I'm sure that they are an excellent product............ when they work !..........but supply and technical support is abysmal and they ain't cheap either !

Let us know how you get on with the jetting there is some awesome knowledge on this forum

I also use Boyer on a lot of my bikes and have been using them for over 30 years. I am doing one now and there service is great and have a phone number.
I also have used Petes PAMCO and had good results but refuse to buy the XSCHARGE knockoff. There will be a problem with mismatched parts and that will happen because most think they are buying a PAMCO and you are not. Time will tell and I will sit back and watch.

Don't feel alone. I got a new PAMCO with e-advance from him in March. Works great until bike warms up then looses spark. Sent several e-mails and several messages asking for help. 3 12 weeks later no help. Going back to points for a while, then a Boyer.

what is this knockoff all about DG ?
Is Mikesxs selling a copy of Petes PAMCO ?

This is the problem with anything you design and market these days ....sooner or later someone is going to use a manufacturer in the Far East to copy it cheaply . Petes now got the problem of trying to establish if the customer who is asking for tech support or warrantee service replacement has a legit PAMCO or a knockoff copy .

Boyer electronic ignitions appear to have had the same issue. A couple that worked for Bransdens for many years left Boyers and went to New Zealand to set up their own company and now sell what looks like a a Boyer copy with a few bells and whistles called Pazon .
Bit difficult to persue any possible copyright theft or confidentiality issue to another Country http://www.pazon.com

@GLJ Because i learned way more about the PAMCO than i ever intended it sounds like the eadvancer May have a short in the board. Do you have 3 v on the green wire and 12 on the red on the side of the box closer to the Hall effect sensor side?
If you have the style with the blue e advancer box i have a brand new one i no longer need if you want to try it.
