What is a phase 3 regulator and how can I tell if I have one on my xs bike? Sorry if that's a silly question. New to the game!

Try this for help with electrical stuff. Good wiring diagrams and information.

I think you might be referring to a 3 phase rectifier, not the regulator.

A three phase alternator will have three wires the same color coming from the stator. A stator is wound three phase, the rotor can stay the same. The XS stator is three phase.

I'm not the top electrical guy but that is the way I identify a three phase alternator.

The stock charging system on all the XS650's 70 through all years is a 3 phase alternator. The earlier years, 70-79, used a mechanical regulator with a separate selenium rectifier. The later 80 up used a solid state combined reg/rec.
Depending on your bikes year depend on which system it has.
On our 650's the regulator controls the alternator output to about 14.5 volts. The rectifier changes the 3 phase AC current to DC current.
