Press start, nothing happens.

Anyone have a checklist on where to begin checking when the starter wont crank when you press start. 82 xs650. Just put the motor back on. It cranked before I took it out. Didn't touch the starter. Battery is good. Any help is much appreciated.

In 82 the wiring got some added complications. You should have a look at page 160 of the Haynes manual.

Use an ohmmeter to check that the handlebars are grounded. The handlebars supply the ground to one side of the starter push button.

If in neutral the neutral switch must supply a ground to the starter lockout relay.

If in gear,the clutch lever switch must be closed and the sidestand switch must provide a ground.
