so, apparently, you shouldn't hoist your bike by the rear stay. It's not a very interesting story... just embarrassing. Part 8 in the diagram:

Anyway, i tried pounding it back but it's screwed up the bend and I can't get it right and now the chrome is all cracked. so I think if I can replace it that would be best.

anyone with something like this? '81 special.
 
your picture shows the tubular steel stay used on the SPII 79-81? I will take a look but we don't usually have great chrome here in the midwest.
 
OK, the one I have is on a 79 SPII hinged seat.
Like the one shown in the main diagram.

I have several of the "big fat ugly" cast aluminum ones like the inset diagram.

I also have this one, probably also from a 79 special II, genuine Yamaha accessory I think.

Yes he has an '82 and this part was OEM one year only for the '81SH. Some folks like the cleaner looks of the chromed tube and swapped them out. I would be one of those folks.
