Got into the clutch on my 1980 xs and found two, what looks like possibly some sort of snap rings. This is the first time I've got into the clutch side of this motor and it was apparent previous owner had got into it before but the bike ran fine except for the clutch slipping a bit and the kick starter spindle was not correctly engaged thus why I took it apart. Has anyone else come across this? They were just laying at the bottom of the case, and I have never seen anything like them, wondering if they got accidentally dropped in on last time it was disassembled.

There's a light weight coil spring on the starter gear assembly that helps throw it out of engagement, #2 in the drawing below. Maybe those are parts of it that have broken off .....

Hi 5twins, its definitely not from the Kickstarter spindle assembly, everything working properly and the rings are really really thin.Hard to think someone dropped them in and left them without noticing but I have come across strange things before that people did to their motorcycles or cars. I couldn't find or think of any other application that they would belong to so hopefully was just a weird mishap that they were in there.

The hooked ends, looks like a broken retainer ring clip that fits at the back of the 80-83 clutch hubs...

You are referring to the retainer wire for the clutch plate? These rings are only about 2", clutch retainer wire much larger and as stated everything is in working order far as I can see.The kick starter spindle spring and tang were not positioned right which is another reason I decided to look into that side of the case but all parts are there, nothing is missing. Thought the possibility that there was a special model/year these may have been used but cant find anything they would be applied to, previous owner dropped them in there I suppose, pretty weird.

That return spring I mentioned in post #2 is the only thin wire large coil spring I know of under that cover. Did you pull the starter gear assembly out and check yours? It's behind the bigger gear in the red circle .....

5 twins I did inspect mine, everything looked good and I did replace the original starter with new one before installing the engine back in the frame.

We *have* had members finding things in their engines that were simply overlooked leftovers from previous work...
