Replacing shift shaft/lever spring

Hello,

My XS650-H often pops out of gear (esp. 2nd - 4th). I think this may be because of the spring on the shift shaft and lever (Clymer p.80 Fig.7). How hard is it to get at that spring? Is there any post or article that outlines the procedure? Would there be any other reason why it would be popping out of gear?

You may have a problem with the starwheel's stopper wheel.
