I pulled off the front wheel of my 1981 to have the front tire replaced. (I believe it was the original tire.) As you are most likely aware the speedometer dive unit slipped out of the left side of the wheel. I was wondering if I should do any maintenance type work to the drive while it is out? Should I inject some oil into it? also, repack the wheel bearing?

Have a look here in post #157. There’s some good photos of the speedo drive broken down and maintenance tips.

Also look at post #508 for a special precaution.

I never pull out the little gear or the threaded part the cable goes on, not even sure how. I just flush and clean them in place as best I can.
