I have a 1978 xs 650 motor that I got in a basket. I got to putting the stator on and it looks like it takes a large nut (about 24 mm) then a smaller nut to hold the stator on. The book I have is not clear about what holds it on. Please help.

The large threads on the rotor itself are for removing it with the proper puller only. You need just the nut that goes on the end of the crank and a lock washer to hold it on.

Is your rotor in two pieces? If a ham handed PO used a gear puller to remove the rotor he may have separated or spread the halves (if so rotor is toast)
