Took out the tach cable to make sure it was not broken. Lubed it as well.

Seems it will only operate between 1500 and 2000 rpm on the gauge.... when the engine is running...

Any thoughts or answers ?

Much appreciated

they get old and sluggish (hey I resemble that remark!) you can try getting it warm and driving it with a reverible drill turning it upside down sideways ect. to loosen it up but it may just be dying, fortunately they are usually fairly cheap on E-bay just make sure you get close to the right year you need to see the back of the gauge, later models drive comes in at a angle early ones were at 90° and some of the lights were different check other models too sr500 xs500 xs750 850 as all the bikes used the same gauges good luck with it

Also the 78/79 Specials have the Neutral and high beam lights in the taco where the later specials only have the high beam, also the 650 taco is the only one to have a red line at 7500 i think the XS100 works as well
