I'm restoring/building a xs 650. right now I'm stuck on getting a gas tank. I started with a 1980 frame, but don't like the 80's gas tank. I already powder coated the frame and don't want to refab the tank mounts right now. My question is what 70's model tanks will fit on a 1980 frame?

Have you seen this one from Mike's?

Steel Fuel Tank - 3.9US gallon (15 litre) " Standard" type
Includes chrome gas cap with keys. Tank is painted Black with Gold stripes
(No Yamaha Name) and is patterned after the original 1977D model. Tank uses two petcocks part 20-0019

Does not include petcocks.

Fits: Any 1974-84 XS/TX650.

Standard tanks fit. You might be able to go back as far as 1973. I'm really not sure about the XS-1 and XS-2 tanks. Certainly, you can go back to at least 1975 for a perfect fit.

I am assuming you don't like the Special tank. Anything other than XS650 will require modifications.

Awesome, thanks for the advice, and i'm sure early years don't fit, because I have a 72 tank and its too long. I just didn't know where the years for fitment stopped and started. I'll keep 1975 and up in mind when I try to buy a tank. thanks

A '78 Standard will pop right in and the petcock mounting holes are the same spacing as your '80....though the '78 uses two petcocks.
The '77 Standard tank has a bit of a drop/platform where the smaller than the '78 and '80 petcocks mount, and the spacing of the petcock mounting holes is a millimeter or two less than the '78/'80.....also two petcocks. You can blank off the extra petcock openings on either tank if need be.
No personal experience with the '75 and '76.

74-79 standard tanks fit the Specials 78-83.

74-77 standard tanks have manual petcocks and 78/79 standard tanks have vacuum petcocks and as nj639 says, the 78/79 Standard tanks have the same mounting spacing, (interchangeable), as the special petcocks and an indentation where they mount on the tank to allow for the extra length of the petcocks and all Standard tanks have 2 petcocks.

78 standard tank petcocks are a stand alone vacuum type that are still interchange with the later models 79-83 Standard and Special tanks. The 79 standard and 78-83 special tanks have the same petcock

74/75 Standard tanks have a different gas cap that changed in 76 and the 76-79 Standard gas caps interchange, the 76-79 standard gas caps look like the special gas caps but they don't interchange

thank you guys for the help. I love this website!!!

Vdubbles24, If the tank is rusty inside, or paint is bad, thats fine I can deal with that plus i'm painting it anyway
But I can't have any dents in it. This bike is going to my Mom when I'm done with it, and want it to be perfect. My dad rides a Harley, and want it to look better than his.

Thanks

Hi. Would you know where I can get the gas tank channels for the 70s standard tank that go in the frame? I’m mounting into an older Honda Nighthawk. Any info would be great! Thx

I think they’d be pretty straight forward to fabricate, or find something similar. Dimensions are aprox 1 5/8” diameter (not including the flared ends) by 1/2” deep
