Commedian Whul has a very interesting story of how that came to be. Catch his show on HBO, something about him as a Proffessor in some school, can't remember the name, but it was pretty good. I think he closed with it.

Steve McQueen was one of my 'good guy's', the other being Paul Newman. I used to race with( compete against) Paul at Limerock. Steve was just way kool, damn cancer!
