Transmission question, do I have problems here?

looks like the gear lock thingy (cant find the name of the part) is broken in 2 places, but there was no debris in the engine case... not sure if im looking at a problem or not.
parts manual doesnt show this. it locks into the gears.

Yep. New 5th gear for you. Take a look at the shift fork as well for damage.

Out of curiosity, what usually causes this?

Generally, just being hard on the shifter. Meaning, jamming it into gear. Could just be a sub-par gear who's time was up.

I will venture to guess that this happened long ago and was driven without 5th gear after discovered. there was no debris in the case, probably came out in an oil drain.

I am assuming this engine is a new acquisition? You might want to take a look at the gear next to it (the one it slides into) and look for any damage as well. It would be the middle gear on the shaft (3rd gear)

after looking around, seems more economical to buy new gear sets off ebay instead of individual...
