Two stroke memories

You know , I remember my high school years like it was yesterday. There were three dealerships near my house, one sold Yamahas exclusively, one sold Kawasaki's and Harley Davidsons which was an unusual combo, and the other sold Triumphs and Suzukis another unusual combo. All these bikes were new and current models at the time, now I think about them and they are collectible classics again. I remember going to that Kawasaki dealership and dreaming of those hot rod triples, and at the Suzuki dealership , the water buffalo's and the GT triples, and then at the Triumph dealership looking at the Tigers and Bonnevilles, never dreaming that 35 years later I would own a Bonneville. It's all kind of surreal.

Speaking of 2-stroke porn...
This just popped up over on in the Classifieds on advrider:
Jimmys%20Blaster%20from%20ADV-XL.jpg

An XS500 frame/tank with a 35HP bored and stroked Blaster engine, modified YZ250 suspension, etc etc.
Dang that's sweet.

Digging thru old paper photos from the past this morning, and surfaced this picture of the green Yamaha 360 I had about 30 years ago, or more. It was a busy garage, even back then. The Triumph was still on the road, the Ghia engine being rebuilt (again), my first kart being raced in the MidWest Series, and had a favorite bike, a Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo (yes, it had a Mitsubishi turbocharger).

Very nice! I got a couple of questions for you regarding the turbo and the RT360.

How long did you have your turbo and what were your perceptions of the bike? The turbo era was fairly short lived and it surprises me how often well cared for, running examples surface here in Phx.
Right now on here Craigslist are two non running , long term storage, Yamaha turbo Secas and no less than three Honda CX650 turbos.

Re: the 360, I've heard they vibrated badly. I've always been fond of them. Which DT Yamaha do you think is better, the 360 or 250?
If you could find a good one for restoration?

Hi Mailman,
how could I have missed this thread until now?
back in 1955 my very first powered vehicle was a 32cc Cyclemaster (look 'em up, you won't believe it otherwise)
Then a 1931 James 196 (not the 197, they came later.) The 196 had plain main bearings with a blind bore and a cast iron piston
Between various 4-strokes there was a plunger-frame 1954 James 197 and briefly, a 125cc Vespa.
Also got to ride two different buddys two different Scotts. A 1928 2-speed and a 1949 3-speed.
Not too many 2-strokes in Canada. Had a mid-1960s Jawa 350 twin and a 1972 Suzuki GT750 triple.
And I just recently paid $200 for a 100cc basket case Yamaha TwinJet. Subcontracted the assembly to
my son who got it running and plated which is why I had to trailer it back home when it quit on him.

Very nice Fred! I'm going to have to do some research in those obscure brands. The flying Scotts were the first brand you mentioned that I'd ever heard of.

Btw, I'm jealous of the Suzuki GT750!

Loved those 2-strokes. Had many growing up, racing a Bultaco 250/175 and Yamaha MX175. Mostly trail rode 2-strokes, including Suzuki 250, Yam.
125/175 (ATMX) RT2 360, IT175, 400 and my 1st was a Sears Allstate 125 ('hard tail') 3 speed hand shift.
I still have a NEW 1978 Bultaco 125 Streaker in my office. 0 miles, never started in US.
Love the nostalgia, Mailman...

Now that little Bultaco is cool!
How in the world do you resist the temptation to take that out and fly!
It's beautiful!

When i first bought it, I jetted it and static timed it for this altitude. Our service manager had one and got it running great, so I just
copied his mods. I was going to start it every summer for about 5 years, then said...why? and installed Marvel Mystery Oil and
kept it in my living room. This summer, I put on new grips and gas and breather hoses (rotted) and it's good to go for now.

Bob,
It is rare that a turbo shows up in the ads locally, tho a friend found a survivor Xj650 turbo with 3K at an estate sale last year. I had mine for 4 years and cherished it; minimal turbo lag and superb power. However, I weighed less back then, :D so the power-to-weight ratio was more in my favor.

I got the DT360 from a bike dealer with 2K on it, nicely tuned, and I don't recall vibe problems. Never ridden a DT250, but I keep searching for them. One appeared last year for $5K; ridiculous.

The Scott Flying Squirrel, what a machine!, water cooled with a manual power valve to alter the exhaust port and it was on a road bike not a race bike. This all was many years before Yamaha released the LC with water cooling and the RZ with the electronic power valve.

My brother & I had two strokes back in the 1970s. He moved on to an XS650 & I got a CB650. I used to think of those old two strokes as primitive.
Now that I’m an old guy collecting Social Security, those old two strokes have character. (As a does the XS650 I got because my brother had one.)
Like many old guys, I mostly gave up on bikes when life got too busy but started collecting vintage “memories” a few years ago.

Here is a pic from the recent Mods vs Rockers. The two GT750s & GT380 cafe are mine & the GT250 cafe is a friend's.

That's a very nice collection of bikes. I'd love to see some more detailed photos of your Suzukis if you care to post them!

Don’t have many pics on Flickr yet because I’m switching from Photobucket.

The red 1975 GT750 is stock.

The gray 1975 GT750 has Suzuki GS-series wheels & forks, and a Jemco 3-into-1 exhaust.

And the 1975 XS650.

Have Flickr albums for the GT380 & GT250 cafe builds.

Man! You know your way around! Seriously nice work! The GT380 sounds so good. I love The staccato sound of that triple with the expansion chambers.
And that little 250 is deceptive. You don't realize how much nice work you've done to it until you really start looking.
Great bikes all!
Thanks for posting them!
And of course your XS650 is a beauty also!

Yeah, I'm a 2-stroke guy at heart. Out of the 50 plus bikes I've owned, only 5 where 4-stroke. The first back in 1974 my Dad got me a 66 or 69 Honda S90, then in 2008 an 08 Ducati Hypermotard 1100S, then in 2011 a 75 HD Shovehead FLH, then in 2012 a 2009 Yamaha TW200, then in 2013 the bike I currently ride a 2009 Kawasaki KLX250s. It was much easier listing those. I started riding at age 6, and haven't been without a bike in my life since, I'm 55 now. I raced MX for close to 20 years, so of course all 2-strokes back then. I worked in motorcycle dealerships most my adult life. I've had an H1 500 78 maybe? don't remember, and a 73 RD350. Those were the only street ring dingers. What brought me to this forum is wanting to build a flat tracker for the street. A local Hooligan bike. Kinda like the sound of the XS650 and that its a popular bike for tracker builds. The 2-stroke part of me wants to build off of a RD350. I guess I won't know until I have the funds and what I find at the time. Planning to start this project within a year or less. I had to jump in on this thread cuz, like I said, I'm a 2-stroker at heart. I'm even selling my thumper dirt bike for a 300 2-stroke dirt bike. I really enjoyed going through this thread, as it brought back some fond memories......

hehehe yah Me too ! Love the RD's I am also a 2 stroke lover.... I just wish I had one now ! HA !
.... the XS650 is Great but so darn heavy and then cruising speed is winding it out too tight for my liking
......
Bob.......
