Kevski, the thing that gives me heartburn with certain vendors is that they keep selling products that are known to be bad for years because they make more from the junk than they would from good items that are currently available. Then when I point out the defective item it often induces a shill to accuse me of making a personal attack on the vendor. Maybe I should just shut up and let guys waste their time and money. Anyway, I truly admire your tolerant outlook and even temper.

Jack, your post indicates that you've already decided what to do with with that camshaft--use it for a doorstop!

Wisdom?! Thanks for the kind thoughts, Jim, but if any of us geezers had even a trace of wisdom we probably wouldn't be fooling with motorcycles, let alone old ones!

Yeah... good point. Suppose I could use my retirement years to learn how to paint dog portraits or sumpin'.... ;)

Back to the thread and head, i checked the stainless valves in the stuffed head all within spec no oversize stems even the one that bent, so this head will go on the back burner, replacement head stripped cleaned threads chased, de-coked, what little there was, tappet cover stud repaired, valves cleaned checked then lapped in, re-assembled and put back on the motor, waiting on camshaft seals otherwise it would have been up and running tomorrow, will video it running when done.

Back up and running today, put the motor in yesterday, this morning i was at it before 6am, every thing back on except seat tank panels and battery before 8.30, then off to work until 1pm, quick bit of lunch, then put on original side oil filter, tank and battery, few kicks to get some oil moving, plugs in choke on, second kick and fired straight up, settle to a nice idle, checked behind tappet covers to make sure a good supply of oil, strobed in, only a couple of degrees out, will balance the carbs after work tomorrow and get a video of it running, much quieter than before, and only cost around $200, struck lucky with the used head.

    Good for you!
Still would like to know how the valve got bent above the guide. I have seen my share of damaged engines. Never a bent valve on the top side.

Got a small video of cold start no choke with replacement head, done in the garage with phone so sound is rubbish, i balanced the carbs after.

Maybe the piston tried to stuff the valve back up into the rocker?
I'm trying to think if I've ever seen that and it's not ringing a bell..

Xs valves are burly! Like Toyota 22r burly...
    Also heavy.

Did we ever find out if the retainer failed or was improperly installed?

All retainers and collects were still in position, all stems and guides in spec, only other evidence was a substantial witness mark on the inlet valve
