Nice I have the same year and color. The frame says 78' but the title says 79, not sure what to call it. Last year of the standard! Also last year of the nice aluminum racing rims! Then they went chrome on the specials.

    rsor Wanna do this again!

Ususally I work for an hour or so, come in and add something to the shopping list, warm up for a bit, and go again. If it gets to bad though, I do have a furnace in the garage, and do light it up on occasion.

79 XS"F" was a fun bike to go get last night.
It was 110 miles to small town Jct.City Ore.
Today is the " morning after" and I'm really actually pleased at the "rust rough" but original condition. Here are the initial pic of this adventure.
Not in any hurry at all. Just want a runner to play on and study. Kind of a spontaneous bike to grab but hey, they are few and far between around here ! Chat more later, thanks for all the positive and motivational interest everybody.;)
    $1300 in my truck.

79 XS F is now being slowly stripped for adequate and acceptable servicing before any running attempts.
This evening I found airbox rubber components needing cleaning and improved installation. K&N filters are in need of washing too. The whole air intake system was leaking and grimy. Removed the box for cleaning.
Now it's my turn at this tank rust cleaning as well. The biggest reason to not run the bike is because of the ugly rust in the tank which has likely gotten past the fuel tank internal filters as they were blown off by compressed at some point. I am concerned but the carbs did drain nice and clean. I'll prob pull them next.
Speaking of vacuum petcocks. These 79 units are not like my 78's. They seem to be like the "Special" petcocks. I'll bet they are garbage now. Fortunately I do have a spare set of 78's.
I'll be checking out valve train and charging system and ignition components too soon. Looking around for an auxiliary temporary fuel tank for testing .
It is fun to be back in the garage with XS's !
The Honda Turbo nightmare is gone. No BMW DualSport. No more side tracks, Just 2 XS's now for me. I swear ;)

OK Mailman , I'll post somewhere Lol.
Bear in mind I cannot come even close to Bobs wonderful "build thread" contributions!
I'll slowly putter & piece this 79 F back to a descent runner. Kind of like I use to .. No Laughing ! :D
My first question is .. what are these fuel petcocks ? Stock 79F or off a Special ? Anybody got a good eye on this pic ?
Second question.. I'm thinking about flipping these funny cafe bars over and using them on my 78E . Anybody post a pic of these "right side up" lol
    Thx, -RT

The petcock mount holes are spaced differently on the later Standards, I think when they were switched to vacuum taps. 77 - 78 maybe?

Here is a 78E vacuum tap. Ive actually had very good luck with this version of these.
I'm a little scared of the version I'm seeing on this 79F

Welll..... Switching out rear fender and light from Special style to some late '70s one with square light and two round reflectors. That will let me attach a backpack to the sissy bar without covering up the light. Noticed the light is loose because of worn/dried rubber, so will take it back off and tighten that part using rubber grommets from hardware store. Flapping will cause things to break, including the license plate.

A couple of backpack possibilities. I got one at a yard sale for $1 that is something like this:
    https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rockland-Rockland-Roadster-17-in-Rolling-Backpack-Black-R01-BLACK/302603254?cm_mmc=Shopping|G|Base|DD|29-59_LUGGAGE|NA|NA|71700000032321870|58700003838920744|92700038953612547|pla-636627119957-47028262037&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_p-AnL_r3wIVCY3ICh0rvQLlEAQYAyABEgK_DvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The handle goes through a sleeve sewn into the back of it, that the sissy bar will go through. The one I got has the thickest canvas I've ever seen, almost too thick, so it would be pretty good. I'll have to drill out rivets to get the handle and wheels off of it.

Another alternative is a motorcycle backpack Walmart sells. It also looks pretty good. Maybe not as durable as the other, but maybe slicker looking, and slightly larger. Probably about equally good. Was actually in stock at my local Walmart.

  12. Trying out a different tank on my 74 - it is a repainted (black) 72 tank so I am rinsing with Oxclean powder to start the cleanup process.

^I really want to return it and fix up the other one if possible. It looks like it would be good, but the other one is like a $1 win. Can't get up the chutzpah to work on it though....

Little update on my seat, got the Ducati seat latch lined up with a keeper (made from a bit of rod) so now the seat locates with the original front catch then locks down when you push it at the rear. The top has been lined with ally plate ready for upholstery. The threaded bar to hold the bits on is Tig welded to the base plate for neatness, then the steel and ally plates are sandwiched together around the fibreglass.

Per the hint on the forum, I got brave and followed instructions to replace the kick start spring anchor with an M6 x 1.0 bolt on the 77 cases.

Yes had broken clean off ( previous owner) and fell out once I took the side off. Since the PO also took off the starter and the gearing for same, and I do not want to split the cases to reinstall
them, I am thinking this motor will go back on the shelf for a while. It might be good for my brat rat some day.
    Too many projects.
