I pulled my spare engine in the lineshack today. ( Wish I could get my bike in like Jims doing) It's a 4M4 1980. Valve edges look good from what I can see. Intake valves kinda black and oily but exhaust valves are tan. It has good compression. The plugs were burning tan. Looks like somebody parted out a pretty good running bike. Not too shabby. I notice a lot of blow out of the single engine breather pipe. I didn't notice this on the 447 for my 77 but I didn't kick it over on the stand. I think it's normal. Pressure in the crank case has to go someplace when the pistons go down, then the reverse. I don't know why we don't have blow-by and oil leaks on every seal we got? Has the black box ignition. I'm pondering on how I want to go about starting this thing on the stand. But it's safe out of the cold and weather for now. I'm just an engine guy, I really like em'.

Yeah, but getting to bump the burner in the cell after build-up...makes the ground shake.:)
You can have your cell. ;) I'm a line guy. I'll take 2 TF-30's on the trim pad... at night... in full burner.... I'm gettin' goose bumps here... :D

Hoooo yeah! But if your not chained down you'll slide your tires! Oh, your on the trim pad, your chained! You know how it feels when you bump burner and the front end settles. You can feel it strain at the chain. Our TF-30's didn't have burners. They were in our A-7's.

Our 111's had the TF's with burners. The A-7's I worked had TF-41's. Yeah, no burners on them either. I'd give a lot to spend another night on the pad.

Yep, we moved to TF-41's from 30's. Mostly the attack A/C. The fighters had the burners. I forget, your Hound Dogs had J-52's in the pods or were they
J-57's? Course they didn't have burners. I got all kinda pix of night ops on the boat. All you see is flames from the burners.

A Boeing 757 will jump chocks or ground loop with the brakes set. Takeoff power runs require a big load of fuel for necessary weight.

I know they got them big fan engines, either Pratt or Rolls.
As a mechanic on the line, I prefer the Rolls. It's much more reliable from my perspective. 41,000 lbs thrust IIRC. The airplane looks better with P&W 2000 on it. Of course, that's subjective.

Trimming the early RB211 on the L1011 was a pretty exciting undertaking as I recall. My version of good old days.

Today I hauled home a next project 79XS650 Special II that will be called “RescueMod”

Of course the first thing to do is to remove stuff inspecting as you go. Which so far has been all positive. The frame as you can see is cut a little as this bike was in process of becoming a “Tracker” I’ll have to find a new sort of custom style which suits me. That is going to be fun ! It will be my Green bike as the search for 78E green body parts is still on for the 78E which still waits patiently for spring now. I’m finding some great parts on this 79 as it appears to have under 7k miles on it.
the exhaust system does not lie and it is just primo for a stock Special exhaust system. Anyway, I’ll put some pics in here and tell you that I’ll be removing things for awhile doing all the greasing and such as this project takes shape. Bars off next ! :D

Euro bend and bar end mirrors are most likely for this. The frame tabs for the side covers are cut off so Uni Pod filters and some kind of custom covers? I’m going to work with this brown seat. It fits snug. Custom holes are there. The rear fender, tail light, turn signals are going to be ??

Here Is the very last pic of this XS in Military guise. I believe it must have served short but effective enlisted duty action as it does show minor battle scar. Salute !
So, off with the tins to get to the bones and start the determination of just where to go from here. I started by digging through the headlight bucket and down past the adjustable clubmans and to the steering stem and found tapered bearings, greased, So that was a fine quick start there. The front end is a fine place to start on this XS as the aluminum front wheel is going to be hi jacked for now completing the extra set of 79 SpII wheels to have on hand. That knobbyish front tire is not my style. More of a roadster like? tire is needed to compliment the fat 5.0 Shinko on the rear. A temporary very ugly front wheel is now on there. Don’t be alarmed as it will be replaced with a very pretty chrome XS front wheel.
I’m finding things like a too long Motion Pro clutch cable, Mikes XS coils, New RT. side handlebar switch and a fine working master cylinder. Whew.
Lastly today, pulled the Carbs which are the primary suspect as to previous end of completion on this project XS.
Fuel lines corroded. Carbs not drained.
I’ll be opening these BS38’s up very soon. Finished the few hours today on a fine feeling . Looking ahead.

I do believe there was a build thread for this bike some years back. Try putting Military in the search box.
