What have you done to your XS today?

Anybody Recognize these coils on my 79 project ?
The bike has MikesXS parts on it but I didn't find this set online yet.
I assume these are approx 4-5 years old as the rest of this project seems to be.

Machine, your advance looks OK, I can see the raised ring in your new pics. It's assembled correctly.

Can't say for sure where those coils are from but they're definitely aftermarket replacements. The originals are gray colored, on the later models anyway, and have brown and orange wires .....

Thanks for zooming in on my advancer pics 5twins. Early in the garage with a flashlight and a magnifying lens it was clear I had no hands left to work off the circlips
:lmao:
The advance unit looks good but it does stick and needs disassembly for greasing. So does my other XS by now too.
I better figure out the best trick in my tool box for those circlips..

Searching for OM11-50 403 as printed on the coil gives:

Brand New 2FastMoto Yamaha 12 volt / Single Output Ignition Coil

Replaces OEM #'s : 254-82310-60-00 / 1A0-82310-10-00

SPECS ON THE SIDE OF COIL: 12V OM11-50 403

The yellow (+) on the coil connects to Black / White (ignition / kill switch) on the bike

The black (-) on the coil connects to the Blue (condenser / points wire) on the bike

I better figure out the best trick in my tool box for those circlips..

If you have have a fine point scratch awl , you can work the point in and gently pry the clip loose. I still broke one, and the other went flying! :D I found replacements at my local hardware store, a wee bit different but they worked fine.

Thought about those advance unit circlips and springs along with the difficulties of seeing all that up close in poor light. Here's how I handled that ;)
Pulled the advance rod right out the advance unit side intact right past the weights. Didn't even disconnect the springs.
Again, everything was very dry and needing grease (the whole bike is like this) but, Bam ! Sweet condition of the shaft journals.

Felt some 600 deg PTFE die grease at work and it is Slick. Maybe that is what would be best for the advance shaft?

The Thrill of the Hunt
There was an ad for a complete 650 bobber built from a '71 which seller had put on a set of '76 forks, so I contacted him to see what he had left over.
I bought a drum brake front wheel (good condition) with a pair of parts quality fork legs, a set of three silver cables - speedo, brake and clutch, an oddly coloured tank and headlight, decent 2 into 1 exhaust, an oil screen and two side filters, Pamco e advance and a bunch of other stuff.
My second guessing starts now.
