I don't typically encourage addictive behavior,
but this sort of collecting is an exception.

For me, the particular intoxicant is breathing life into a barn find.

Fuck me lol so this washer was installed between parts 1 and 2... which I don’t see in the manual. Also is bearing 2 pressed onto #16? Or does it rest on top of?

Today I might have fumbled upon a nice battery suggestion? XS time was kept to a minimum due to other commitments but I did the usual stop at my local Cycle Salvage store because they have a stack of batteries out of newer motorcycles and I'm trying to get to a test fire up on the 79.
Yes, a few minutes of bs and $20 later, I peddled home with this modern AGM battery. Made in America. I eyeballed the size :rolleyes:
Now at home I've discovered just how well this battery barely slides into the stock box minus the rubber part which this 79 doesn't have anyway. The really cool part besides the great (snug) fit is the rated CCA's of 220 ! That's high for an XS and I figured I better pass this on as so many XS'ers do use the electric start routinely.
I actually prefer to kick em but hey, my knee is not getting younger either..
So, study this brand and compare the CCA's to others and just maybe this option is good news to somebody out there !

I am really falling in love with this bike. This bike wants to be ridden. I have never ridden a bike this well mannered. And its only going to keep getting better because there's still plenty of work to be done. And it's so easy to work on. I can see why there's such a community following it.

Despite having friction plates that are out of spec, I have a pretty decent clutch. I hardly have any trouble finding neutral. I should do my bike a favor a get her some new plates though.

The Manual is in error. There is a thrust washer on each side of the bearing. I think the inner one is thicker than the outside one but my memory fails me. That one is the thin one and it looks like it got trapped somehow. They are spring steel but brittle.

So I came in to work some OT today. Made it halfway there, and with the interstate being so dead and all the news of more states going on lockdown, and the overhead signs we have here saying “do your part, practice social distancing” I felt like I was in a dystopian sci fi story. It’s feeling really weird. I turned around and decided to take the bike in case we get put on lockdown too. On the way I passed a military vehicle convoy of about 6-9 vehicles heading east on I-80. Our management says we’re essential since we produce hygiene and food packaging for P&G, so we shouldn’t have to shut down, but if someone here becomes a confirmed case, we’ll be shut down until the health department deems it safe to open again. Long story short I took the bike to work for the first time this year. It was chilly to say the least. I also noticed she doesn't get quite as fast as she was last summer. I was able to get to about 95, with decent torque up to about 85, and then the last 5-10 mph would be a slow pull and top out at 90-95. Now she basically loses torque around 70, I can edge up to 80, but I’m not getting anywhere close to 90. How much of a top speed decrease should I expect from my new gearing? I forget what I did; I think it’s the stock 17 tooth up front and one tooth less out back; it’s been so long since I bought the sprockets.

You are rapidly discovering the value of keeping detailed notes on your bike changes.
When you get the second bike, and then the third one, you'll realize what a necessity it is to have those files on each bike.
 
I can always just go out and count them. I also save every old part I replace; I’ve got all
My old clutch plates, both sprockets, the shocks, even the chain that was on it and all my old spokes. I just didn't remember off the top of my head and didn't want to go digging through the forum to find any past posts I’ve made about them. I bought the new sprockets right after buying the bike, I think even before I got my motorcycle license. I just didn't get around to putting them on until last fall. I do keep records of oil changes and part changes
 
When "The Basketcase" goes back together, I'll be keeping all the old parts tagged & bagged, and all the new parts cataloged. I have to do this, as I suffer from C.R.S. (can't remember s**t), among other minor self-inficted brain injuries (of the recreational and alcohol-related nature). As if I don't have enough "junk" laying around. Oh well...during all this "social distancing", I'll be building a new shed and enlarging an old one, so that ought to give me some room...
 
Helped my buddy with his 72 (pics attached). We checked compression in his engine and my 75 extra engine. I got compression on both sides to 120. He got 130 on both sides in his 72. Figured that was good enough so we pulled the engine. I'll probably just check out the top end, clean it up a bit, and paint a few things. Hopefully that's all it needs. Last week I swapped out both of his wheel bearings. We are still looking for forks for his 72. Basically looking for 73-76 34mm forks to work with late model wheels / rotor and early model brake caliper. The thread can be seen here http://www.xs650.com/threads/72-rotor-79-wheel-question.56810/. I'm going to put in new fork oil and seals in the 75 this week.

Made some cheapo brackets today. One for the license plate and a temporary bracket for the taillight.

Bike came to me with frame already modified.
Motor starts and idles nicely; almost a shame to list it on Kijiji. All wiring to be done by a new owner. I do not expect much response on account of the virus shutdown.
It's funny, the more I work on em, the more I don't really want to see them go away.
