Just added the 78SE wiring diagram to post #10........note the wiring around the safety relay and compare the 2

I could be very wrong but those are not stock XS650 carbs. So maybe try and identify what they are and rebuild them or replace with some XS650 carbs.

I was going through the diagrams, just learning how to read them. It's still very confusing so I'm taking my time looking through them. Is there a legend somewhere explaining all the different symbols? I'll keep looking to see if I find one

Anyone else know if my carbs are stock or not? I will open them up sometime this week to see if I can clean them out and stop the leaks. The float bowls may be leveled wrong. I'll ask for Carb recommendations once I figure out my wiring harness.

My main goal right now is to figure out where the wires to my indicators are that way I can at least raise the bike to work 5 days a week. I work at a Motel doing night shift so I have literally all night to read all the links on testing circuits and wiring harnesses! I'm excited!

If you google it you can find some helpful info on reading diagrams. It’s confusing at first but once you get the hang of it it all starts making sense pretty quick!

Yes, you have aftermarket carbs, and not very good ones by many reports. They are the notorious PWK's, non-affectionately referred to as "Pukes". The way they're belching fuel all over the place, I guess you can see why, lol. By the corrosion all over them, it looks like your bike was ridden hard and put away wet many a time, left sitting outside in the rain as well. You've got your work cut out for you for sure. If it were me, I think I'd hang a "For Sale" sign on the old girl and get out while the gettin' is good, lol. Then find a better one to fix up and live with.

The loom has been hacked so there is no way to be able to help you sort out where the wires have been disconnected or if they have been cut off.

5Twins is right........there is a lot of work to be done and for a novice there is every chance this bike will challenge to the point of exhaustion...........and cost a lot of money

Link to a thread on these carbs

In all fairness some people have had success with mikes carbs but this is recent not the early set up

When I say I'm keeping her I mean it guys. Money is not the issue. I will order a new harness after testing some circuits and seeing what works and doesn't. The carbs can be replaced with no issue. She runs and all so it cant be that bad. I already bought new fuses and will work those in tomorrow.

I know daddy has custom harnesses so I will checkout his page and start from there after continuity tests.

If you guys have any other advice I'd love to hear it.

get the kit from harbor freight, it’s cheap and works fine. Don’t give up on it man. The bike runs so that’s a good enough start in my eyes. Electrical is easy and throwing a set of new carbs on it is also easy. The carbs from an ‘78-79 XS650 I’ve read are the better of all the carbs offered but they’re all perfectly fine carbs.

This kit from TCbros is your best be for new non oem carbs.

And there is also this whole thread about people having good success with Ninja ex500 carbs. So needless to say you have plenty of options!

I definitely wont give up on a running bike that Iike so much man! Thank you! Today I'll clean my current carbs and if they are still leaking or deficient then I will order a new kit! I have Daddy working on a custom harness for me so that I can know the diagram of my bike. This current harness is allover the place. I will do continuity testing too just to see what I get out of the current wiring.

Hello guys, I changed out my fuses and the bike runs even better now. My only immediate concern now is figuring out how to make my turn signals, front and back, work. The PO wired in a light strip on the back 20201014_212441.jpg 20201014_212503.jpg

The dark green, black, and brown wires are the signals wires from the stock harness. I tried reading the wiring diagram and look through what he did but its hard. I was wondering if you guys had any tips.

I could disconnect all that he did and go from there.
