Eastern Washington has blue skies and fresh air today. Along the Columbia River on a remote stretch.. 80mph is fun. 100 felt even better in the ZoomZoom.
Stopped for a hike in the rocks to rock hound a bit and spotted this small cave. Sure enough, pictographs in there. A little damaged by vandals in the past ofcourse but still very fun.
The Gorge native population was once very big.

It's getting to that time of year. Doesn't get light till gone 7:30 and dark again before 4:30. Give it another four weeks, at the winter solstice that will be 8:00 and 4:00.

When I go out for my daily walk at 7:30 it's just about light enough to see where I'm going but the sun doesn't show its face until after 8 o'clock. By midday, the sun in the southern sky has risen to about the height indicated by a Nazi salute and then it's dipping back down again. So the useful part of the day for doing anything outdoors is really between 10 and 2. If you're out on two wheels or four you're spending a lot of time squinting due to that low sun.

Our back yard never sees the sun at this time of year.

For correspondents like ArticXS in Norway the situation is more extreme.

However, although Scotland is fairly far North, the weather is not as cold as it would be without the Gulf Stream. No frost last night and today the temperature will climb to a giddy 11°C, about 52°F.

That bike in that light, priceless pics!
The problem with warm dry weather in the fall is you just want to ride but KNOW those honey-do projects are going to be MUCH harder in a week with cold and snow adding to the fun.
The Venture disappeared last week, sounds like it's going to Alaska next summer! Buyer said all my buds are trip planning, late model Harleys, he said F doing that to a new $30K bike, texted back that he rode and loves the barge. Will have to gin up a new road trip bike for next summer. Stay tuned. LOL

I was stationed in Iceland for a bit over a year. Arrived at Keflavik in January of 1987. SERIOUS culture shock, weather-wise. The Sun rose just enough above the horizon to flip ya the bird and then right back down. Dark 23 hours a day. Add that to the fact that it was an unaccompanied tour and I left my family in Maine, it was pretty damn depressing. Not much in the way of Gulf Stream effect so it was coldernell too.

Of course, the flip side of that coin is that in June, it's Daylight 23 hours a day...

Edit: BTW, the shock was amplified by the fact that I transferred direct from South Carolina to Iceland. And before South Carolina, I was in Florida for 5 years. Blood was thinned out pretty good...

Thanks Gary (those are un-retouched pics btw!). Haha, yes, that is the inevitable game that we end up playing in the fall right? Tricky bit for me is that my winter storage is about 85 miles away from where I live and where the bike is normally garaged....so if I try to cut it too close I will have a few hours of miserable riding to reflect on my error in judgment. We had a snowstorm a week before that picture was taken and I thought for sure I missed my window....sure enough a few days later we hit 70 degrees.... that's New England weather for ya!

I’m watching a TV series on Amazon right now that is all filmed in Iceland. There is a stark Beauty to it, with the mountains and glaciers and all, but not a plant in sight, just snow, ice and rocks. I’m curious, in this program I’m watching, the Northern lights are a prominent feature, does that really show up in Iceland? I’ve never seen them myself, being a desert lizard. :laugh2:

That Honda should be a pretty comfy distance bike, easy to live with. Does that batwing fairing do much good, or does it just create a lot of turbulence around your head?

Yup you know how I Iike feet forward. Batwing, neither perfect or bad. Not really my style, heavy bulky, bike came with a smaller (much lighter) shield also. mebby that, hand and leg guards?

Ya know, I don't recall ever seeing them. Keflavik is out on a little peninsula on the SouthWest corner of the island. I think better viewing would be to the North.

Iceland was a good tour for me professionally, it led directly to my promotion to E8. Personally, I was in a pretty grim place before I transferred and the weather and isolation there didn't improve things any. I've blocked a lot of it out.

Fortunately, I'm feeling MUCH better now...:p
