will a 78' xs650 rear wheel fit a 81' xs650 special?

I'm looking at buying a rear wheel with a disc for my 81' xs650 special. I saw a 78' xs650 (OEM #400280266438) wheel for sale. The seller said it fits a 80' xs650. I just want to be sure that it fits before I buy it. I do not want to get stuck with an extra rim.

Your '81 should be a drum brake wheel, and the '78 is a disc brake wheel, so you'll need to get a rear caliper setup, master cylinder, different brake pivot, and do a bit of fabrication to get it all working. To make things a bit easier, you might want to look into picking up a disc brake swing arm.

I am not concerned about fabrication. I am going to use a rear brake set up off a Desmosedici. I just want to know if will fit the axle? I am just curious if the 78' and my 81' share the same axle. Do all xs 650 share the same diameter axles?

Yes, all rear wheels use a 20mm diameter axle.

There were several different models in '78, from what I can see the standards used wire w/drum, the specials used mag w/disc.
