Hi,

maybe someone can advice me with the front axle installation to my Yamaha XS2 1972. I took some pictures, and here are my questions:

1. picture: the parts (no question here)
2. picture: does this axle-tube go in here, and how deep should it go (it`s very tight)? Should that washer go all the way down to the axle-tube`s bottom (it`s also tight)?
3. Do these little parts belong in these holes? They look home-made, maybe I could get originals somewhere.
4. What about this collar, should it go inside the oil-seal (it`s very tight also)?

Looks like you have it in the right order, cant remember about the collar off hand ,there are a few threads on here relating to the ruuber buffers ,(the little home made pieces) They are impossible to get and most people resort to a diy job, they are there to take up the slack from the poorly designed rotor/hub floating disc combo.

Well, I keep posting these pictures, because I´m totally confused with these front axle parts. I`m hoping someone knows how to assemble this, and maybe could send a picture of assembled front axle. I have the parts picture, but it`s not helping in this problem.

1. picture: the axle-tube in place, and the rubber/metal washer tapped to its stem (not sure if it belongs there, the rubber circle in the washer got a little bit broken, it was so tight).
2. picture: on the other side the axle-tube is not contacting the bearing, so this side`s bearing is in a way meaningless (the axle-tube is narrower in this end, the other end`s thicker area is not reaching this bearing).
3. picture: collar and oil-seal in place on the axle.
4-6. pictures: brake disc assembly in its place in the fork, the nut is not going far enough to the threads.

Yup that thread pretty well covers it.

Oops got pulled away and posted without seeing your last post Pasiv. I'll see if I can do a "real" exploded and assembled view for you.

Here's some shots of the 72 rotor and parts from various angles.

Looks like you have a washer behind the flange on the sleeve that shouldn't be there?

The parts i put together are missing a grease seal for the inner bearing, I think #23 on the diagram.

Also looks like some extra washer between the sleeve and fork leg.

The shots I took were from two different sets of 72 parts, one was pieces when I got it and I just stuck it together. The other is assembled and hasn't been touched (by me).
The sleeve IS a very tight fit into the inner races of the bearings.

Thanks for you all, I appreciate your help a lot! I think I can now assemble this. I take away that extra washer. And I realized that the new bearings that I bought from XS650 Shop were thicker (wider) than the originals. That`s what brings the oil-seal on the disc-rotor so far out, and on the other side the other bearing is not even with the surface.

By the way, as a hint if someone ever is struggling with this issue: if your disc-rotor bearings are of right size (I mean the thickness), then the extra washer may be suitable. It`s made of two materials: metal outer ring and rubber inner ring. In the parts picture there is described a part that looks like it. I`ll take a picture of it, when I get it off from the sleeve (which I wrongly called axle-tube).

Thanks again!

You are right, my "parts assembly" is missing a grease seal for the inner bearing. I didn't check the parts fiche names, my "sleeve" may well be your "axle tube".

Thanks gggGary!

Here`s a picture of the grease seal in the stem of the sleeve. The picture is not very good, but maybe you can see the metal outer ring and rubber inner ring in the washer. I also attached a picture of the old disc rotor bearing and the new bearing: the old ones are 8 mm of height and the new ones 12 mm. So this is pretty much causing the problems with the nut not reaching the sleeve`s threads enough.
