Hi everyone,

It's my first time on this forum and I am David aka Renard49.

So, I bought that Yamaha XS650 from 1971 that was already customed by the previous owner. I am in restoring that queen and I have issues with the wires as the previous dude redid everything and nothing is per original plan or colors etc.

I would need someone to help me plug the correct one to the correct other end.

I won't put the flashing light but just the main headlight. My contactor has 3 positions using a key. At my contactor I have 0 wires but just 3 screws shaped like a ring.

Sorry if complicated. But I tried different conenctions and it wont start or light up. So far, I did not succeed.

Thank you in advance and I am ready to answer any further questions.

Welcome to the forum, David.

I see no 1971 parts on your bike. All looks like after 1973.
You also have the European left handlebar switch, with the "Passing" light.

The forum has some wiring diagrams:

And a guide that can help you to find which model year.

Yeah it's a 78 sorry, my mistake. Problem with the diagram, I have one as well, is that the colors of the wires have been changeed by the previous owner. And my problem is to find each end of it. Gonna try with the digram you referreed to me and see how this goes. thx

Welcome aboard Renard! Yes you will need to work out how the terminals connect on that switch, it is from a tractor or other type. You may find it is; off - on - start spring loaded on the "start" position. or it may be off - on - on + lights. or maybe park lights -off- on.

Yes forks look 78 up you should check how far the forks are inserted into the top triple. they may not be pushed up as far into the triple as they should be. Normally that rubber plug on top sits completely above the triple, not flush to the top. The way it looks it could be dangerous, not enough metal to metal contact to be strong.

Hi and thank you for the answers.

I had to buy a Wire harness and this is what is confusing: I bought this one: https://www.mikesxs.net/parts/yamaha-xs650-wire-harness-european-end

This is where it ghet confusing.

And this is what is missing (in red, top to bottome, left to right)

dark green and dark brown: turning signal

I have tried different configuration and used the shema provided by the website but as the Harness isn't matching colors it's really a pain in the ass. I get sparks or just nothing out of my different pluging.

Hi David and welcome,
I'm surprised you bought from MikesXS in the USA instead of from Heiden Tuning who seem to use the same catalog and are located just next door.
Doubtless there are reasons a Canadian may not be aware of.
Anyhow, perhaps some of the wiring problems can be attributed to the limited functions of your bike's aftermarket ignition switch?
Purchasing an XS650 ignition switch to use instead of it could be what is needed.
