Hello! 42000 miles , imported fromcanada since 5 years ,no modifications .Only BIG problem , she needs LEADED petrol and it is no more allowed in france , i have to buy unleaded benzine and my own mixed at home..I bought this bike because when i was young my father got exactly the same..I was 11 years old in 1972.:)

Are you sure it needs leaded petrol ,I thought our 650's were built to use unleaded fuel from the factory .Mine runs happily on standard unleaded.

Definitly , i hav a letter from the boss of "yamaha france" , he says She must have lead , only for XS 1972 and XS 750 1972..All other XS can have unleaded..

There is no leaded street gas in the USA, all years of the XS650 run quite happily without it. The one year only statement makes the claim very suspicious. There is nothing all that odd about the 72 engine, it is identical to the 73

The valves used are the same as all years 1970 to 1983
IMHO Use unleaded and don't worry.

At last weekends XS650 rally there were a 71 and 72 owned by a father son team, both high miles, regularly ridden bikes. They were drinking unleaded just like the rest of us.
