Thanks for allowing me to join, I've just bought a 1972 Yamaha XS2 from New York. It was last registered on the road in June 1982 and has covered 21000 miles. She's now in North Wales having some much needed tlc. Quite a few parts needed, a lot can be saved. Over the next few weeks I'll be stripping her methodically and attempting to un seize her, along with getting more work completed on the workshop and it's fitments and tooling. I'll be asking lots of questions too and hope you guys can help. Thanks Moodubs

Ha ha why thank you, a challenge, you wanna see some of my other projects, I've scaled down by almost 50% on quantity to get them finished, always wanted an xs650, I think the Honda seat is a cover only as it's on the original base which is rotten. Just working out what's scrap and what's 're useable. Thanks

Welcome. Glad to see another XS2 here. You do have a project there. Time, money and patience and good results can be had. Can you post a better picture of your front brake. There should be 2 nuts there. One for the disk shaft and one for the axle.

Un seizing an engine in situ.....
If I was to do it again, I'd drain the oil and leave the drain plug(s) out, pull the spark plugs and pour the desired penetrating stuff into the combustion chamber above the pistons. Wait until the penetrating stuff starts showing that it's down in the crank and then use a socket and breaker bar on the rotor nut- stator side (don't use the Kickstarter) ...it could take days for penetration but that should remove the guesstimation of if its ready.

Hi nj,
that works to turn the engine backwards but turning forward only loosens the nut.
How about putting the bike on it's centrestand in high gear and trying to turn the rear wheel back and forward?
And yeah, quite a project "But I've seen worse."

Welcome to the sight If you want help with your 650 you've come to the right site
These guys are good and they don't mind helping a person out
Check the classifieds once in a while you might find some parts or use the wanted section to try and find what you need
I've got a few parts from the classified section that I may have never found anywhere else

Gad Zooks.. a tip of the cap for take'n this project on. The 72' Xs2.. is the best look'n year of the XS series. Most where the candy red and white.. a few, blue and white.
Please provide photos on the engine issue… cam chain snap, ?, piston stuck from long term sitting ?
PS: since you're across the pond and visit " jumble meets " (swap meets here).. if you come across any Blackburne engine bits… let me know.... rare as chicken lips around here... we'r use'n Buick big block valves on mine.. they fit except the length.

Hi Mike its seized from sitting since 1982 when it was last on the road in New York, whats Blackburne engine bits pls

It's a 1929 500cc.... stuffed in a Motobecane (French) unit... common back in the day.. the brit's provided engines for many other makers….mostly bicycle manufactures try'n to convert to motorcycles.
My machinist …. has went above and beyond... had to send the crank assembly to your side of the pond to be rebuilt because no one here can do that style of bearings and rod work. We found that a Pinto piston fits perfectly.... My " pilgrim " oil meter-pump unit is suspect.... haven't found a replacement yet... the machinist thinks he can get mine to work.
This project is a bigger money pit then owning a boat …. :)Blackburn sleeve.jpg

Too bad that bike and project didn't stay in NY I have a few bits that are left from the bike in my picture over to the left. Not sure if any would be of help but am afraid the cost to get them to you would be rather high!

Actually taking a second look at your bike it does look a bit better that the one I have some bits left from.
