It's past time to start XS2 Resurrection

I believe the plastic was intended to help the cover slip over the foam during installation, the foam can be kinda grabby. I’ve seen some online write ups telling you to stretch plastic wrap over the foam before installing a seat cover, Ive never done it. And I’ve never seen a seat cover with plastic on the underside either, so no I wouldn’t say it’s important.

Interesting. The new cover I ruined has it sewn in. On both old and new cover it's only on the the actual seat area not on the sides. I was thinking it's a moisture barrier in case the foam gets wet or maybe to keep the foam from getting wet. Be interesting to see what others thoughts are.

Seats done and back on.

I did some searching about the reason for the plastic on the seat cover. Only thing I could find was a few comments about vapor barrier. What I decided to do was cut a piece of rubber and glue it to the top. I guess I'll find out if it hurts anything. Seat doesn't look to bad and it feels good.

Almost forgot. I took it for a ride. Not too far. Tank was on reserve so I wanted to put a couple gallons of gas in it. Good news is I made it there and back. Clutch worked well, trans shifted fine. Bad news, about 6 blocks from home it started running on 1 cylinder. Hmm I knew it was low on fuel so I was hoping that was the problem. Limped it to the station and put in 2 gallons. She fired right up, idled OK. No joy as soon as it got above idle it would loose a cylinder. Limped it home. The right cylinder is not hitting above idle. Going to drop the bowl off and see if it's got any junk in there. At least it lives!

Lookin good Greg! I’m sure your miss will be something minor, a plugged jet or broken wire or something like that.
Sometimes it can drive you crazy looking for it. You do have the right pilot jets in there don’t you? LMAO! :laugh2:
You remember how long I chased that one?

Problem solved. Dropped the right float bowl and sure enough the main jet had what looked like a piece of white thread or lint in it. Must have been from a rag I used when working on them last summer. My bad.
Went for another ride. About 7 smiles. She runs good. Didn't run it past 5000 rpms. Pulls nice and clean, no stumbling or fumbling. Did a half dozen deccels. May have a little more vibration than the other motor. But I haven't put the head steady on yet. Couple more heat cycles then re-torque head and then I'll put head steady on. All in all I'm happy. Trans shifts well which I was concerned about. When I split the cases I found the shift shaft was bent, replaced it with a used one I had.
Seat must fell pretty good, I didn't notice it at all.
Beer thirty.:cheers::rock::woowoo:

Excellent! You’ve got quite the fleet of ‘72s there Greg!

well done indeed.

GLJ...most would have passed on a bike with rims like that. I've been using Evapo-Rust since it came out...a miracle product. Reminds me , I need to flip over my battery box basting in evapo-rust.

Rims look excellent. now make 'em run strait. I use the same acrylic car paint sealant on every part I clean, chrome, aluminum..or, paint after I get em where they need to be. It stops any further oxidation and has a smooth feel finish...poly-grip bonds

Phase 2 complete starting on Phase 3. Little things
Haven't posted here for a while. Original engine back in and running. Got 3000+ smiles on it. Been fighting with the carbs a bit. Ran OK just not right. Maybe more on that another time. Went for a ride this morning, 40 smiles. Got home and decided I would do something I've been wanting to do for a while.
Got back from ride about noon, weather warming up. Decided I would make frame stiffeners for the front mounts of the engine. Have had surplus material for a while. I had noticed that on newer XSs the front mount was tied together. Why not early ones.

Little lathe time and they were born. Should help keep the front end on the ground during acceleration, make the bike handle like a GP bike and add 5 MPG due to better aerodynamics. :geek: OK if you believe that I got a bridge for sale. They do look cool and I had some fun with my lathe.

What could you possible have? Your bike looks better than new.

All new gas tank rubber mounts, the front ones are crappy and the rear one is wallowed out where it drops over the post and it lets the gas tank move too far rearward. But I’ve got the cure! ;)

Time for a few changes.
Rode the old girl a few times last week. Decided I was tired of the way it sounded. I liked the 2 into 1 I had on it but the sound wears on you after a couple hundred smiles. I got a set of Commandos a few weeks ago for a future bike. Since I had them I decided to use them. Also had a somewhat decent set of head pipes from a parts bike. Might as well put them to good use.
Did a little searching but didn't find anything on putting Commandos on a early bike. I'm sure it's been done hundreds of times. Decided how I wanted to do it and got started.
Made some hanger parts. After a lot of measuring and test fitting got them done.

Hangers mounted. I know it would be stiffer if I added a third piece of flat to triangulate the bracket. It seems plenty stiff. I made the hanger out of what I could get locally.

Spacer block installed. I know some of are wondering how I'm going to mount the passenger pegs. Simple as of right now I'm not. I really don't like riding 2 up. If my girlfriend wants to go for a ride I've got the BMr. If I ever decide to mount pegs I'll make new spacers with a longer stud.

Reason I didn't use a steel plate is the vertical piece had to have a bit of a twist in it to mate up with the spacer.
