I explained all of this in the description which you clearly didn't read.

- it is not a 1980 Special II except maybe for the engine, fenders and the instruments
It absolutely is a 1980 Special II. The VIN is listed and you can use this forum to identify the year and model.

- the tins (tank & side covers are 1975 Standard parts
I listed in the ad I swapped out the tank for a 1975 standard. The Side covers are 1980 Special covers (special and standard covers are not interchangeable) with a 1975 decal set stickered on them. This is also listed in the ad.

- the taillight is aftermarket as you say but I doubt it would pass a safety check without the turn signals mounted
I clearly stated that the tail light is an aftermarket Lucas style. I also stated that the turn signals were removed but the wiring is still there. The next owner can decide if they want to run them or not. In California there is no annual inspection so this is a moot point where I am located. But like I said, one can easily add them to the bike to pass an inspection.

- I’m pretty sure that the rear wheel is a 1974-79 Standard item while the front appears to be an aftermarket 36 spoke steel rim spoked to a stock Standard hub
Yes the rear wheel is from a Standard with an 18" rim. I like the look and ride of 19 up front and 18 in the rear. The Special II's 16" rear wheel was not cutting it so it was replaced. The front wheel is the stock 1980 steel rim not an aftermarket anything.

- the brakes and seat look nice - but they aren’t stock
The brakes are stock brakes with an added second disc. The rotors are late model Yamaha rotors. These are the same as the "upgraded" floating rotors for sale on sites like MikesXS just taken from an older used bike. The seat is a Standard seat pan that I cut the foam down and had reupholstered. The special seat pan was not the shape/style I wanted from this build.

....and the price....?
The price reflects fair market pricing for these bikes in San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA. When you look at the total number of upgrades and the fact that the motor is a brand new big bore rebuilt from the bottom end up and add up the cost to do all of those things, the price of the bike is much cheaper than the sum of the parts and labor.

You are entitled to your opinion on how much you think this motorcycle is worth but its not like I listed it for $20,000 or anything outrageous. If I had a detailed build thread outlining all of the painstaking work and meticulous attention to detail that went into this motorcycle all of the forum fanboys would be clamoring at the prospect of owning this bike just like I have seen time and time again for people who have done similar builds and asked for a much higher price.

As someone who is a top contributor and well versed in the various models and and performance/cosmetic upgrades commonly done to these machines I can only assume that you are bored and trolling me asking questions that you clearly know the answers too. Or even worse making comments without reading the whole thing, a practice often met with angry tirades from veteran members replying something along the lines of "use the search button first before asking".

I'm just trying to sell a motorcycle that I have loved and owned for years to support my family in an unprecedented time of uncertainty. You don't have leave snarky remarks. If you're not interested in purchasing the bike or spreading the word you are wasting my time and kicking the virtual tires.

CoastsideXS650 - I am really sorry. It was not my intention to be snarky or criticize your bike. I did read the description as I have always had a soft spot for 1975 B-models and that is what caught my eye when I saw the photos. I was just trying to help you describe it more accurately and clearly in the thread title so that it would attract the attention of people who might be interested in it. As to the price - well, yes, we all have our own views and if you feel that is fair in your area, then fine. The point I would make is top dollar for an XS650 normally comes for a bike that is original.

Anyhow, I have removed my post - and please accept my apologies for the ruffled feelings.

MaxPete, you sure are a fan of those 75's
;)
Coastline, cool bike.. I've noticed Cali bikes are a little higher in price than up North too.

Sorry Pete. I've been dealing with craigslist tire kickers and the mounting stress of Shelter in Place for almost two months now in SF. It felt like an attack and Im sorry I reacted that way.

Yeah CA prices (especially in SF or LA) are astronomical compared to the greater North American continent. Normally I would list an original stock bike that is decent in the $2500-3500 range depending on how clean it is. But like all machines 40+ years old they all need some kind of rebuilding. Just a top end, fresh tires, swingarm bushings, and a battery will bring that up to $4000-4500 in the hole already. That is more or less where I came up with the price. Like all bikes I have ever owned $4000 might be 1/2 or 1/3 of what I have put into it.

Not at all - I was off-base and I’m sorry. These times are getting to everyone it pays to take a step occasionally.

....and yes Randy, I do have a thing for the ‘75.
Pete
