What have you done to your XS today?

I'm thinkin' the easy out ain't gonna help here.... :umm:

How hard have those 34's been on ya? Just ordered the expensive kits with different jets and such from mikesxs..will attempt them on Cinco de Mayo after my last final exam!

--> watching this gave me the confidence to do it..so I bought everything he used...

This will be the 4th set I've gone through so.... they're fairly easy now. I don't use the kits... either OEM Yamaha parts or Mikuni stuff from Niche Cycle.
I think @gggGary was pullin' my leg.... couldn't get the bubble gum to set up hard enough for machining. On to plan B.

About finished messing with wheels spokes weights bearings...letting the thought of using "beads" in my tubes leave my mind. Just going to stick 42 gm of 7gm on the rear n 49 gm on the front rim as they all balanced out and spin strait. A 1st for me.

My Last Special
One of my "just chip away at it" projects: I installed a motor today. Bought this as a bare frame 8 or 9 years ago and using up the good left overs.
Supposed to rain tomorrow so I can concentrate on the wiring on the 73 TX650.

How many of these old 650’s have you resurrected now? You’ve been cranking them out for a while now.

Well, my 79XS has been tested well lately and I just am not quite happy with the carb jetting. I guessed on my mains and increased the thru bore with a .058 reamer.
Too big! Not that it runs bad on top but it isn't using all the main and its rich in the midrange and the idle isn't that stable either so experiment over.
I picked the last two 137.5 mikuni jets near me.
20210426_071736.jpg

A 137.5 measures a loose .055 but still no go on a .056 btw
Then I really wanted to change out my mains with the carbs on the bike and just didn't have the right tool. So I've modified a couple after work on the hardinge lathe.
:)
Flat blade size10-12 have a nice thick blade for the brass jets but don't fit in the drain access threaded hole. Turning down the blade and hex just far enough to reach those jets is the answer. .260" diameter fits both the mikuni jet and the access threaded hole.

Lookin forward to gettin home to the garage as I have never had appropriate tools to change main jets so easily.

That is really slick Randy!

Garage time, after the evening news
And the new carb jet tools are great! Right up until I dropped a main jet and it went down under the left cover.. :( see it there on the shelf above the sprocket?
But the good is under that cover I found a loose engine mount bolt as the nut on the other side is gone! That's two loose fasteners so far. The left side exhaust header mount and now this engine mount bolt. Yes, I've run this XS hard enough to shake it up !
Back to the Carb main jets. That went very well with either flat blade I modified for doing this so that's a win. It's all a win actually. Just ran out of time to start it up. Gotta get ready for the 5 am alarm clock :banghead:

You know it's going to be a long morning in the shop when it takes a big chunk of aluminum and a 5 pound maul to free the oil filter housing from the bottom of the motor. Yamabond both sides of the gasket.
20210428_105253.jpg
about 1/2 hour in on bottom scraping.
20210428_105312.jpg
All done, hylomar on the housing, grease on the motor side. fresh oil in. neither screen torn, no big chunks.
Had a drip on LH side, pulled the cover and found the last guy in there (me) hadn't bent up the sprocket nut washer. Sprocket was loose and that was the drip. Whooh! Chasing a lighting glitch or two then ergos and bags for the road trip. :geek:

Ripped out half the central nervous system. PO routed the harness incorrectly, then replaced a 10A fuse with a 30A instead of actually troubleshooting whatever issue he was having and finding the three spots that were rubbed through. Going to replace the fried wire and wrap the adjacent wires that the insulation melted onto with electrical tape, then wrap the whole thing with marine heat shrink. Probably won't be able to get to that until next week, though.

Well, I think you're on the right track. A suggestion if you haven't already thought of it.... after replacing the bad wires, thoroughly test everything electrical on that bike before you start wrapping it back up. It sucks to put everything back together nice and tight and tidy, turn the key and find out you missed something. Don't ask me how I know that....
Btw.... give us some good pics of the bike after you get it back together. We like pics. :D
