Com'on he has to diagnose problems way before trying to build an ignition system............hell, hasn't done a compression test yet after a stuck motor.........lol..........

Been sitting out side with any cover, what are the carbs like???........condition of the rotor????.....Wiring???.......Can the OP do the work himself, Gonzo????........what are his capabilities???

Non of the above has been assassinated or information offered.........i did ask some questions that weren't answered..................yea lets build an ignition that will solve all the problems....lol

Couldn't agree more. See my post about leaving well enough alone until he has other things (carb and charging ) taken care of.

A question was asked about the Gonzo and what it is so I answered the question.

My point was don't go out and buy a 250.00 ignition when more pressing issues abound . And by the same token don't buy a new set of points because that is not the inexpensive route.. I think he should use the ones he has now until he has the bike running and the other issues taken care of.

Yes Sir Mr Skull .. Of Course you are right . advice has been given from Experienced people .. World Class
But Not everyone is prepared to listen
Some want to try it their own way
Some are rich and do things as a Hobby .don't care if the bike runs or not.
Even though it makes sense and is right from Motorcycling and Experience based viewpoint There are other aspects
Self Esteem .. Macho ... Bravado Doing My thang The way I want..
I do know a couple of things ..calling Myself expert ..( not Motorcycles )

But it happens that I gets lectured ..by people who don't know the first thing
And When i tell them they are wrong Aggression and self Protection can follow.

Sometimes people that go about it the wrong way gets it right by Luck or Fortune
And we all made mistakes in the Beginning -- Believing I got this.
I suppose you also seen those buying a Cheap bike and never got it running.
Failing to realize that in this case a +40 years old motorcycle fresh out of the manure stack can give challenges
At times to big for a beginner.

I don't know what the English word for it is Money ill spent to learn it the hard way
Say he buys a Gonzo a $ 60 That is not the end of the world .And getting support from those
People putting in Work
You and I know that there is virtually not a snowballs chance in Hell that the bike will run .Then either
( But not 100 % certain )
But after that he will be seeking advice and listen.
Lesson learned some money lost .. But if we relax ..Things will sort out.
He will come back ..if he has the personality for it and wants the bike to run
I for one will try to help then if I have time

You will have plenty of chances to spend money on this bike. If you have spark then be happy and move on the things you don't have like clean carbs and a charging battery.

Your English is spot on there. That's why I suggested he stay with what he has ignition wise until he has something for the ignition system to ignite.
You might have a surprise with this bike. I suspect that with a good carb cleaning he might get it running from his description. Sight unseen, have no idea what he is dealing with. Sounds like he is trying to follow Skulls good solid advice on how to advance this project.

BTW the $60.00 (Euro ~~50) is to completely replace the entire ignition system. Not all that stuff is required.

And my first thought was that wimpy spark he is seeing is probably the not so mighty stock coils just doing their thing.

Jack's redneck version of Skull's list

1)Go buy a new battery, plugs and a can of carb cleaner. $50.00 that will have to be spent anyway on any scenario involving the bike being a runner.
1A) Check the oil level and condition. As long as there is no water fuel etc in the oil then top up and continue.
2) Clean the battery terminals and the ground on the frame for the negative cable.
3) Check the fuse (fuses).
4) Install plugs. Be sure to remove the screw on adapter on the terminal of the plug.
5) With air boxes off spray carb cleaner into both carbs. Less than 1 second blast into each carb.
6) Kick a few times and see if it sputters.

If if does fire off then the points, condenser, coils, plug wiring, plug caps and plugs are working well enough to continue.
If not then some trouble shooting follows.

We need pictures so we know what your dealing with.

I am just trying to get things on track, when it seemed to be fixated on a new ignition, in line with the OP stating he doesn't want to spend to much money, hence the posts to go back to basics and start with the loom and testing components..........

Also
Bike has to be identified/confirmed as well. To many have been identified by the date of manufacture and not the model............could be a 78 and that gives rise to another set of problems for future diagnostics and information given

Skull I took your advice went through the wires cleaned em and moved to the carbs. Going to do some continuity testing and stick with the points till she runs. Got all day tomorrow to try to make it run.

I was looking for the questions you asked skull. The bike sat for 5 years outside. No cover. Was started 1 or twice a month for 3 of those years. Stopped turning over 2 years ago and sat. 5 years ago had rings and Pistons replaced due to blowing hole in the Piston with wrong spark plug. Points were replaced around then as well. Looked at them. looked very clean. Picked it up and brought it home. Was seized up. Put some heat to it and marvels mystery oil and penitrating oil in it. Crack on it with a socket till it Broke free. Have not checked compression. Seems good though. Saw weak spark when trying kick it over due to the fact starter is not working properly. Tried jumping starter would not move. Today before work cleand connectors and took carbs off to inspect there condition. Plan for tmrw drop new battery in clean carbs put back on Check point setting and check starter. Then try to see if I have spark. That is my plan am willing for any suggestions other wise trying to learn am very able to admit when I'm going in the wrong direction and change course. Enjoy the banter and all the help guys.

Yeah I was more or less just curious to the options that were out there further down the line. First and foremost I need to get the bike to run

This thing about "started once or twice a month for about 3 years" is really not a positive thing at all. Starting an engine and running it for a short time will just leave WATER inside the engine and exhaust system. Water is the combustion product of the hydrogen in the gasoline, so this is unavoidable. For storage, a fogging spray or similar is a better option. Then no starting before it is to be used.

Absolutely. This is the reason why short, no-real-warmup trips are not good for any vehicle. The moisture left in the engine and exhaust system is slightly acidic and just eats away at things. It is best to run an engine for as long as it takes to build some real heat in the engine.

New battery, cleaned the carb, bike runs. Now on to some other stuff. Need a shortend throttle cable mine was broke when I got the bike. Either going with clubman or clip on. Any one know where I could sus out new cables to suit? Or is fabrication my best option

Old thread but wanted to update that 2 thousand mile plus trip on a kick only bike with points and all stock charging system, was done with zero issues. Including 4 hours of riding in the rain. Started easily, ran flawlessly, 3-400 mile days dry and WET.

Riding a different 70 now, same specs, same story, vroom, vroom.
