Mr Riggs Hydraulic Clutch Conversion

Machining an an internal O-ring groove in a 1" bore.

The sealing element is a .070" "X" or quad seal. (Buna-N)

for cross section .070 ± .003 (basically a 1/16" quad seal)
.061 ± .001 for dynamic depth
.056 ± .001 for static depth
.080 groove width

Am I reading this right?

That’s excellent information you’ve posted a link to @kopcicle, I think that should help me to put this thing to bed... finally!

Daniel.

here is the McMaster part# for anyone using a one inch piston. finding your size is up to you .
through a massive order fubar I have about 200 of these quad seals.
The linked PDF covers many various types and sizes of sealing elements in Imperial (yes that's for your benefit Daniel;) ) and metric.

I managed to get my tool bit the correct width but the cutter geometry is currently an abomination.

For anyone wondering, yes I've not only been following along at home but I've been making chips as well.
I'm in no way competing with Daniel. I'm just not set up to do any kind of production. I have done minor machining for the membership and or locals on a one off basis for many years. So if anyone is expecting anything more than custom valve guides or one off projects from me they can likely do better with their local mechaniacal magician than me.

I now return you to the thread with out too much undo drift

I’m thinking that maybe this endeavour has met an insurmountable roadblock. Too bad, it would have been a great upgrade to the bike.

Well, my monies on Daniel working out a good product.

Unfortunately nothing to report yet, other stuff came up for Rick and he didn’t get around to it.

Rest assured I’ll be pestering him, hopefully get it sorted one evening early week.

Daniel.
Would like to be included in the list for your slave cyl.Not sure how these forums work so will have to take time to sort.Contact me when sorted.Cheers

any update on this??
I don’t think there has been any further communications or updates since the springtime. I was hoping to do this mod. Hopefully Daniel will reappear with the completed parts or perhaps someone else with similar skills, can carry it through to completion. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I saw this thread after replying to your PM.

The step-by-step building of it was documented on The Chopper Underground which no longer exists.

The text is long gong but I do still have all the pictures on my web server.

By the way, the clutch still functions smoothly and effortlessly. In all these years it hasn't required any adjustment or lost a single drop of oil.

Really nice work.

Hi everyone - https://www.xs650shop.de/media/pdf/9e/c7/2d/51_165VA_08_0281A_de.pdf is a hydraulic slave cylinder and clutch master lever/hose kit currently available @ 340.00 Euro + freight. These were unavailable before the covid issue obviously allowed the producer to catch up. Grab
one while you can.
Had a look on their website at the English version of the installation instructions. Installation may require the grinding of a bit of the crankcase to provide clearance for the slave cylinder. It suggests not all nay require this grinding, but for me I’m not going to take the chance. I wouldn’t want to modify the crankcase even if it’s only 1.5mm of material removal. Landed in Canada I’m guessing this unit will be close to $500cdn. A bit rich for me because of the possible interference with the case.

if anyone has some first hand intel on this unit I’d like to hear it. Might change my mind.

Alternately you could shave the slave cylinder body if your cases are already damaged ..if you threw a chain perhaps/and pasted a bit much JB Weld. Remember its to align the slave cylinder and clutch rod only if necessary.

Judging by the time that has gone by I believe this is no longer happening. Too bad because many were anxious to try this out. Maybe someone will pick up the project and start it up again. I would but am not well connected enough anymore with a good machine shop to make the bits.
