I probably would of been putting this 72 I got from Gary almost finished by now if had did not broken my hand. My hand still hurts some but wanted to see if I could get it too run before tear down. I removed the carbs and cleaned them and installed new kits. Cleaned the points, replaced the plugs, set the valves. Installed new battery. The bike started right up. Nice and quiet. I only let it run for a few seconds. It did idle ok. I rem that I did not check the oil. It was over full and was milky - had water in it. Now I am ready to tear it down.
When I drained the gas the last paint installed did not have 2X Clear. Gas ate up the paint. I have to sand it all anyway.
Thanks Gary.

Got the engine out yesterday. Need to clean the engine real good before tearing down. What does everyone use to clean the cases with? I have some orange cleaner that work well but you do have to rinse it off. Sunday is my day of rest. Will try to get to the cleaning Monday. Everyone have a great Sunday.

I put that orange cleaner that I bought at Tractor Supply into my ultrasonic cleaner. I was pleased with how it worked on carburetors and other parts I put in there. I will probably use the same stuff next time, both because it works and because it's inexpensive.

View attachment 203521 Not sure what all this is. Both items are lose.

The thing with 3 white wires and a green cooling fins i believe to be a rectifier possibly with an regulator in it cant see the wires ( combo ) non stock
The thing under looks as a regulator the old type that can give problems stock ---can also be a relay but first assumption regulator
What is connected tell more One or both .fex if the rectifier from above and regulator below.

Can have charging problems.

Now I think about it I should probably should go back to stock. I am not sure where this harness came from. I did get the original wiring harness. The last five 72/73 were all put back to stock. I might need a new wiring harness. What does everyone think?

I like stock and by judging of the picture in post # 7 Machine is in fine shape
I think stock is the way to go. .

. I did get the original wiring harness <----. that one can be to old
. I am not sure where this harness came from. <--- Might be problematic.

If I should guess here the finned thing is a combo regulator / rectifier that has fried the regulator part
Which can happen very quick
And the stock regulator is used
There is then a fair chance the rotor is shorted.
So a new harness is not a bad idea technically Economically it can be different but given the status the stock new wiring
Would be something i would look into
But first inspect the Alternator and Frame + Engine number so it is not replaced
