TCI Replacement 2020 It Works

I Believe my Boyer Bransden Dropped one cylinder when overcharging

puts out close to 30 vpp and I wonder if that mechanism is causing problems..

Thinking out loud a Zenerdiode in circuit ?? as a max limiter ??
To be clear the 30 vpp is with the pickup coil unloaded (ie not connected to the Gonzo) and is not the power supply for the box.

With any of the 4 pickup coils unloaded the vpp is much higher than the RMS value 30 pp for the rawhide and below 10 vrms.

Your spot on with the zener idea and the input circuit on the Gonzo appears to limit the input voltage to ~16 vpp.

Measured at the trigger input on the Gonzo.
On the left RX135 On the right Rawhide
Rpm ~2400

The stock TCI pickup also using the same reluctor setup looks very similar to the rawhide. Large gap in voltage rise RX vs. Rawhide compare the pp to rms valves. low duty cycle pulses.

For those following along

The Mark 2 reluctor looks promising. It dwarfs the Mark1 but still gives wiggle room for the pickup. Next the fabrication of the replacement for the points plate that pickup will mount on.

The make or break will be spark at cranking speeds. I think the new larger orbit should do the trick

So here's an odd one for ya Jack.
I went to ohm the coil in the pickup you sent me, just to see how it compared to others. It was open.... zip, nada.... nothing there.
Started taking it apart and noticed this....

Looks to be a strand of the winding that wound up on the outside of the plastic molding. It measures continuity to the black wire, but it's open back to the orange.
..... Chinese crap?

When I first noticed the wire, I tried to pull on it and felt a "pop" as something let go.
Took it out in the sunlight to have a better look. You can clearly see where the other end attached...

I thinking hangover at work day
I think your on the warm trail.

Why do I keep hearing "Just a Three Hour Tour" ?

I would gently remove the black plastic bobbin surround in that quadrant so not to disturb the qrange connection and see if you can find the other end of the black connection.

It's for testing so being gympy won't effect things to much.

How hard was it to remove the mount from the bobbin ? I know about drilling the nub in the mount.

MY eyes and hands are no longer capable of repairing it.... if they ever were.
Btw, the black is hard plastic. Even an Exacto had a hard time cutting into it.
Once I pulled the lock washer off the white plastic stud, the coil wiggled off pretty easily.

You can tell that it was a pretty crappy molding job on this one. The exposed orange wire was "as delivered." It wasn't done by me.

Standard Auto parts LX109

I believe ( I have nothing to back this up beyond remembering reading it somewhere ) this was originally a bendix part.

May have to go to the Jeep store and find the original dodge part number. There has to be but load of these in a warehouse somewhere.

In the meanwhile this is very shiny and it's $28 for two.

A least you can ohm it out before you leave the store.

I'm looking for my other two. I know one is in the kitchen (in one of two boxes the contents of which are to be banished to Jack's world).

Hoping just a anomaly.

Worst case It would be handy to know the gauge and length of the coil and the bobbin dimensions.

Take a dremel to the plastic covering between the arrows and go fishing.
The (white) bobbin with the windings is set inside an injection mold. The black molten plastic is then injected into the cavity.... bonding itself to the white bobbin.... making a one piece plastic assembly with the windings encapsulated inside. Disassembly is physically impossible.

I'm thinking the black plastic is shoved over the bobbin after the connections are soldered . If you look at the other side you can see the endplate of the plastic shell.

I suggest prying off the cover of the orange/black wires and see what you see.

Jeeze Jack.... :laugh2:

It's all molded into a 1 piece unit. There's nothing to pry off.... no cover.... 1 solid, molded assembly.

Was not what I expected.
I have looked through what the major parts houses , rock auto amazon etc and it looks like they all come from the same source.
I notice Standard seems to have 2 lines of the pickup LX109 and Lx109T (tested ? ) something along the lines of auto zone brake pads etc.
