I am wanting to remove some of the material in the webbing on my mags. I have seen a couple of pics where somebody drilled holes in their wheels.

My question is: did you make sure you removed the same weight, material wise, from each spoke?

I talked to a machinist, and he expressed concern about the balance of the wheel.

Thanks for any responses and I hope somebody understands my rambling.:)

Careful placement and consistency in the size and location of holes will not greatly affect balance. Also I don't run a wheel of any type that I don't first balance. Either clamp on spoke weights, tape on wheel weights or balance beads

My opinion is: the machinist just doesn't want any liability, which I understand completely.
I'm thinking I might try it myself and weigh how much material I remove from each spoke.
Yep to balancing. I have tape weights.............somewhere.

Thanks again.

Asuming you aren't just drilling random holes your balance will be well within normal wheel weights sizes.
I have some Yamaha Radian wheels that are god awful out of balance from the factory, Even checked them with no tires cuz they came with so many weights glued on.....

:) Thanks.

What I am Actually wanting to do is remove all the material in the center of the spokes. I remember the Maxims had no material in the center of their spokes, so I figured...........................why not?

Thanks again.

If your planning to drill holes make a template first. One that fits between the ribs on the mag spokes. Used to make sure the holes are drilled in the same place on each spoke. I wouldn`t worry too much about the weight if all the holes are the same size and in the same place since your going to balance them anyway.

IMO ALL is too much.

is pushing the limits on web removal.
Aluminum wheel casting was in it's infancy when these were done, they made better (stronger) wheels later................

I have to agree. The (XS) spokes are nothing more than "I" beams. They rely on the "web" in between to keep the end plates rigid with respect to each other.
The Maxim wheels weren't designed the same. You can't expect the same strength properties from different designs.

I'd rather see about an inch of web mid way separating an inner and outer slot...

Out of curiosity, are these some of your wheels? This is what I am wanting to do.

Thanks for all your replies.
