War on Drugs?

No truer words gggGary!
Anyone ever gone of caffeine? Boy that's fun, the headaches are really good. Back in the early 90s I developed a urinary problem, needed to pee every five minutes. Saw the Doc, he had no clue, saw a specialist, he had no clue. Around the same time I decided to go off caffeine, decaf coffee, no coke, no chocolate. Almost immediately I didn't need to pee all the time. Went back on caffeine again, pee, pee, pee. So I cut out caffeine for the next decade or so. I drink caffeinated coffee now, and chocolate of course, that's one of life's necessities, but no coke and the problem never returned. Mind you, I was a very heavy coke drinker. I think I used the coke, coffee, chocolate and cigarettes for energy, such was the fuel requirements for my activity levels: MotoX, bush walking (make that running), canoeing caving, rock climbing, cycling, weight lifting, surfing - sometimes nearly all on the same day!

I should explain that the method of abusing opioids, Oxycontin, largely did not involve taking it in pill form and just taking more than the prescribed dose, the pills were crushed, liquified and injected with a hypodermic needle to get “really high quickly”.

Apparently there's another new beast affoot....

Today’s local newspaper:

DOWN: To the arrival of yet another deadly complication in our region’s battle against substance abuse and overdose deaths. Federal officials say an animal tranquilizer called xylazine is responsible for an increasing number of deaths among those who may unknowingly have used it in combination with other drugs, particularly fentanyl. There is, in turn, some concern that the deadly additive may also make naloxone less effective in reversing the effects of an overdose. Law enforcement and addiction/recovery specialists have enough on their hands without yet another mutation of the monster that has us in its grip.

New substance, to me, so googling some minutiae:

The team’s data also point to how U.S. overdoses have shifted over the past two decades. The culprits went from prescription opioids, to heroin, to fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, to now what’s called “polysubstance” use — meaning it’s not just opioids, but also drugs including stimulants and benzodiazepines, often used in combination. While fentanyl appeared in nearly all the xylazine-involved overdoses the team studied, there was also cocaine present in 45.4% of them, benzodiazepines in 28.4%, heroin in 23.3%, and alcohol in 19.7%.

Experts stress the term “opioid crisis” doesn’t reflect what’s happening in the country — at this point, it’s a far broader overdose crisis.

In their paper, the researchers warn that xylazine’s “growth is likely to have epidemiological significance in the coming years, following the trajectory of fentanyl’s spread across the country.” And since the study was published, there are already new signs of the drug’s presence. Last week, an overdose cluster in Austin killed two people and hospitalized roughly a dozen others. Local officials have said they suspect xylazine played a role.

Have you read Alex Berensons book on Marijuana?

Thanks for that.
I drink too many cups of tea, and I've noticed that I'm emptying my bladder far too frequently.
Maybe I ought to try cutting out caffeine altogether, and see what happens.
I'm already aware that tea contains high levels of florides, as if putting it in our drinking water here wasn't enough.
Floridation is apparently a contributing factor in cases of prostrate cancer.

What I understand and believe to be true, is that the food industry depends upon and uses our addictive nature to hook us on their junk. Just about any packaged food is full of sugar. Look around at what a good job they’re doing!

One simple change; canned tomato sauce, no added sugar like the jars have.
I haven’t had a glass of OJ or eaten cereal in over three years. At the office there is a constant barrage of donuts, pizza, cookies and cake. It’s like taking an alcoholic to the liquor store. I know I’m addicted to that stuff.

Tea doesn't have as much caffeine as coffee, but it is present and caffeine can build up in your system, so I found out.

I recently learned that caffeine can stay in your system for more than a week, depending upon your liver function. A healthy liver should deal with the morning coffee in a few hours.

That is, unless my source is full of crap.

Let's get a few facts straight, shall we 46th GA?
1. It was halfway through the war in Vietnam that the total of Americans killed in all other wars passed combat deaths in the Civil War.
2. We were talking about the lethality .223 center fire cartridge, the AR16 infantry carbine, and the AR15 semi-automatic carbine which is its civilian version. This includes its use in other countries' conflicts. Get in a real firefight and see what that Garand 30.06 does to you. I've seen the AR16 work up close and personal, and I really doubt that you've ever seen or heard what it's like when a platoon armed with AR16s opens up on a big demonstration (Tehran, late Jan 1978). In fact I seriously doubt that you've ever heard a shot fired in anger.

I'm 63, except for my type 2 diabetes, all of my other #'s are good. I had someone the other day warn me about the evils of diet soda's and artificial sweeteners in general and caffeine. These are my only "vices" and my mom lived to be 88 and her father lived to 89 and both drank lots of coffee and tea sweetened with Splenda for decades. I don't argue that these things are not healthy, but hey, I've been a paint and body man for almost 50 years. The odds are that that, plus 20+ years of tobacco use, will do me in before caffeine, Splenda and yellow dye #30. Besides, I ride motorcycles, a lot.

I’m 63. I don’t worry about caffeine. If I woke up in your shoes, I’d be avoiding sugar. I’m not diabetic and I avoid it. I don’t even eat fruit.
