I have been running my bike, even with the annoying whirring sound. I am taking the engine out shortly to let Smedspeed diagnose the issue. I have been riding her and she runs lovely, even with the noise. I carried out an oil change to check if there was detritus in the oil, so I used this opportunity to try a classic oil. also fitted an oil sump filter conversion

^I think it's unnecessary and begging to be busted off by debris leaving you with no oil, not even dirty oil...

Oil........ Noooooooo!
You’ve made your choice, so run with it...... Aaaaaahhhh! :whistle:

That oil filter conversion looks great. Is there a write up on it somewhere?
Don't know of a write-up on the Smedspeed conversion but I fitted one to Miss November so there's pictures and discussion on my build thread, starts about here: https://www.xs650.com/threads/miss-november-xs2-tribute.55057/post-598561

Some people worry about the filter being ripped off by rocks - the filter extends slightly lower than the frame rails but is well tucked away and I've never had a damaged filter in more than 10,000 miles of road use. I don't ride rocky trails. Personally, I value the reassurance of having a modern fine filter element keeping the oil clean.

I usually use Putoline

So do I, the motorcycle trader in our village stocks Putoline so I can walk along the road and pick up 4 L of Putoline Formula V-Twin 20W50. I think the V-Twin formula is designed for old-fashioned engines with roller bearings, as opposed to modern plain bearing engines.

Mind you, his prices are going up so I might start to go on-line and buy Smith & Allan oil.

Raymond, I am exactly the same, "The Bike Depot" Worksop has always been a Putoline supplier, if I am correct Putoline only make Motorcycle products

@Raymond . . . tenner cheaper than amazon and £12 cheaper than eBay . . .
That looks like the place to buy. Can't recall what the local chap charged me last time but it seemed a lot more than previously.

Have you had a look at the Smith & Allan site? Their oil prices seem very reasonable. Hmm, go for a known brand or buy cheap? Smith & Allan say all the right things, right additives, etc. A mate gave me a bottle of S&A oil which I've used in the Royal Enfield.

Probably the main thing is changing the oil regularly.
