'74 RD350. Yeah... I know....

Forgot to add this tip yesterday....
Stuck... buggered up pilots and such.... you can get a whole lot more force/torque on 'em if you put the screwdriver in the vise and push in on the carb body.

EDIT: If it's a screw or jet that's out in the open, there's a definite possibility you'll slip off the screwdriver. In such cases, be sure and wear thick leather gloves so you don't stab yourself. :yikes:

Many's the time I've donated blood to the Screwdriver Gods.

Did you know that even a Phillips/JIS screwdriver will pierce human epidermis, given a sufficient combination of velocity and force? Coincidentally (or perhaps not), that particular event will also give you access to words you didn't even know you knew...

Been there!
On a similar note, it's also shocking how fast you can drill a hole in yourself!

Oooooh, rigid wire. My favorite! Puncture wound, complete with foreign schmutz injection!

Did that to my right pointer finger once, wound up going to the Doc in a Box to have it incised and cleaned out. Dunno which hurt worse, the original puncture, or watching the Doc take a scalpel to my pinner...

Don't get me started on nail guns.
Wife: You put a nail through your thumb?! We are going to the emergency room right now!
Me: Nah. I'll cut off the head, you just need to pull it through. It's Tuesday and I only have a few days left of vacation to get this basement framed.

Until you posted that, I'd forgotten the exhaust heat shield on an oil dribbling Ford Escort that laid 3 fingers open while my hands and arms were black with sludge. 14 stitches, and you're right about the pain of cleaning it out.

All this talk about puncture wounds gave me a flash back to a time in my teens. Just for fun I was tearing apart an old, probably 1940''s vintage Chevy six.

Had the head off and was trying to get the pistons out. Had engine out of the truck and laying on it's side. Cylinders were a bit rusty so decided to "tap" them out using a 2X2 and a hammer. I learned something that day, don't use a piece of wood with a bent over nail in it to drive out pistons.

Piston popped out and 16d nail went through my thumb! Funny how it went in so easy but I could not pull it out. I did manage to use a pair of side cutters to cut the nail so at least I did not need to take the 2X2 to the ER! Can't remember how I got to the ER, see mom never had her drivers license and dad was at work, mom probably had the lady next door take us.

Not sure if it was my decision or mom's that that old engine was not worth trying to fix but know it went to the scrap yard not too long after that!

Jim if you are going to modify the porting or fit chambers you might want to think about doing the Dave F mod to your carbs.
There was a lot of info on it on the net if you cant find it I can try and post it here.
The mod essentially uses R5 jetting with a change to the air jet either drill it out or drill and tap to take jets. It uses a different needle and needle jet too.

Yeah, I'd be interested in reading that. In the back of my mind I recall we modded the carbs quiet a bit... but that was all 40-50 yrs ago. I've had a few tokes since then... :smoke:
