Survivor Special '79 - 6737km

Good News Today
I was running the starter to circulate the new oil and figured I would check compression at the same time. All orifices of the motor have been liberally lubed two or three times to be kind to this long stored motor, but even so, the numbers are good.
All clearances checked today and no changes required. Tomorrow I will get the carbs on and see if I can make some noise.

It's a Runner!

But it won't go, lol.
Sorta anticlimactic, though, don't these always start? Not really, I am battling with a BBK and a TCI to no avail, but that's another story.
So now to get this on wheels and dress it with my stock parts. Side pipes were just for fun for first start and to announce spring to the neighbours

I was kind of contemplating buying a set of those, cutting the turnouts off and slipping a set of megaphones on them.

Sort of emulating a set of street tracker pipes....I wonder if that would work? 🤔
I haven't done that, but would probably work with some fabrication. If ya like side pipes, I've got these from https://gunndesign.us/ - they're pricey @ ~$1200 nowadays, but nice

My thoughts too, but the pipes are pretty close together, you'd have to have an offset to the megs or some sort of staggered mount sort of like the early Honda scramblers. Or maybe figure out some sort of skinny baffle because they are loud as is.

The issue you run into is that the pipes fit so close together that there isn’t room for the megaphones without interference. I tried with a set of cone engineering mufflers but they made contact. It could work but would take some mild fabrication. Thought I had a picture but looks like I deleted it long ago.

**JINX**

Those Cone units get a little pricey. I bought them many years ago when they were a bit cheaper. I ordered the with a 1.5 ID to specifically fit those pipes. Wouldn’t have taken much modification to gain the needed clearance. I sold that bike to my barber a few years ago though. Still have the mufflers on some 1.5 single wall pipes though. Here’s a little clip of them running if you want a sound bite.

Thats a beauty 75 right there.

I actually just bought a set of those pipes as well, still researching mufflers for them.

Thanks for the sound clip, that helps. đź‘Ť

Balancing Needs
The forks have come in the mail, so today I spent a lot of time putting the rear end together, chain guard, plastic fender extension, wheel and then cleaning the front wheel ready to go on. Still have to tidy the wiring especially around the battery box but will feel better with the front end installed and be done with the moving dollies.

It's a Roller
All afternoon and all gets done is basic front end install?
Yes but changing this, borrowing that redoing something else eats up the time. Had to take off the plastic fender and loosen the battery box to get the wiring routed to looks about right. And borrow a ground cable from another project, plus switch fenders from another, tomorrow another day.

You're damned fast! I'm headed through month five of a front end install.

I think you've got the headlight ear spacers mixed up. Rubber one should be on the top, metal one on the bottom.

Decisions, Decisions
So I bought this scruffy matte black Special tank last June at the Paris swap meet and I have a dingey spare set of side covers for the subject of this thread and as a change from the factory maroon paint set on it , I have been looking for a different rattle can colour to play with and I just might invest $22.00 CN!!! and buy one. Leaning heavily to the turquoise one.
When did a can of spray paint, even metallic Rustoleum double in price?
On the serious side, I'm fresh out of rebuildable front calipers so I will be ordering a bunch of stuff tomorrow.
