    Mysterious issue with carbs

So I'm at the point of tuning my '71 XB1. I was getting a popping exhaust on the left (sooty, dry). I fiddled with the ignition (Pamco) and got a pretty decent idle. However it would eventually slop out and die. I checked my coil, my plug leads, my plugs. All good connections. Plugs are...

Popping exhaust, Carbon covered plugs and exhaust gaskets....Oh boy

Hey all. So I found that there were bits of paper towel stuck in the inlet. I was able to crank through enough to get them to burn off. The issue I'm facing now is that Both (but more on the left) exhaust headers are popping pretty consistently. I had a little too much oil in the engine and...

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

So here's an update. After a long weekend of a bit here and a bit there, I was able to confirm TDC and adjust the intake and exhaust valves. No dice. Didn't change the fact that there is no building compression. I put the bike in gear and rolled it. It pushed through just like it would if...

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

5twins, whoever installed the PMA did thankfully make a mark on it for TDC. I'll also check with a dowel that the mark and alignment on the timing is correct. ....It's been quite the adventure already. I haven't had my heart broken and my hopes raised in a relationship this much in my life...

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

Hey guys, please don't scrap with each other! You're ALL doing an incredible job of showing up for me and continually taking the time to guide me in the best way you each and individually know possible. I really can't tell you how much I appreciate that. Each of you have individually...

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

Ok I'll try it out. Will the push start re-establish compression from there on out? I do have a Boyer ignition.

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

So would you suggest adjusting the timing and also checking out the valve clearance and adjusting if necessary? Could that shit I found in the filter be from the cam chain guides? Would that cause part of the issue?

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

No. It doesn't want to catch at all. It's just going through a soggy kick with the minimal compression. I (today) dried spark plugs and tried both with choke and without and gave it some throttle as well. Nothing.

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

I do have spark at the plugs. Yes they're getting wet with fuel.

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

Hey all. So I'm educating myself on how to do the valve adjustment and decided in the interim that what gggGary said about not really knowing what I got should push me to do some investigation. This fellow I bought the bike from had informed me that there was a new sump filter from MikesXS...

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

"Way above 5twins asked you to open the LH alternator cover (two screws, no gasket) and watch the motor while someone kicks, did you do this?" I did do this. The ignition rotated

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

peanut, Do you have any inclination what could be causing the lack of pressure building in the kick? It's just a sloppy sponge on kick through. Before I got it started for those two lovely seconds, it would build back pressure before I kicked through. Thank you!

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

5twins, if the valve adjustment fails, what do you think might be the issue?

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

I’ll do that right now. About 1,000 miles. It was put in last summer so has sat about 10 months. He had to stop riding his frame because it cracked. Pulled the motor and said everything was in good running order when he pulled it.

    Help! Trouble with Kickstart/Clutch?

So I must be a flat out idiot. I checked the piston head and there is no holes or damage. The bores are healthy and smooth. Cleaned out with some compressed air. I am now getting about 80 psi in both cylinders. The clutch is working. The kick is working. The car is rotating on kick. The Boyer...
