Ranger's 2016 xs650 chopoff build

That's a nice manifold I could use that on a turbo build. You can also go bigger than a VM34 if you want. I have done a Flat Slide 40mm on one of those from that other company with a bigger cam and 706cc kit it took a little tuning but had some spunk. Single carb less volume of gas in cylinders.

I'm doing a little trading with a fellow enthusiast in California for a custom billet aluminum single-carb intake. (I'm happy to trade services if you have something I need... keeps cash in both our pockets). Anyway... he just texted me a couple of progress pics. This thing is going to be pretty damn awesome. And since it's "dolphin smooth" and centers the carb, I'm very interested to see how it performs.

I like that alot... this guy wouldn't happen to be making more than 1 would he?

I'm running 700cc pistons and a Shell #1 cam... I originally planned to go with a VM36, but after talking to Hugh and Michael, I'm going to see what the VM34 does... I can always go bigger if need be.

He's actually making 2... one for him and one for me :)

He and I talked about it, but the cost of reproducing them would be prohibitively expensive (in the $400 range), which is why I'm trading instead of buying. It's cool as hell, but the cost would be tough to justify, even though I have no doubt it's worth it from a production standpoint.

Wes from Counterbalance Cycles make one out of stainless tube in the $200 range. He normally offsets the intake tube to clear the stock xs seat post, but according to his website he can to a centered one also.

I'll be running these Ducati Brembo brake components on my build.

Pay no attention to the mini figures... they're trying to get me into the Greasy Dozen Builder Collective.

I was originally going to go with a single rotor and a Brembo setup I got off a KTM dirtbike, but the caliper wouldn't clear the buttons on the sportbike rotor without "clearancing" the bracket... which I didn't want to do.

I needed calipers that only had pistons on the outside, because I'm going to have tight clearance between the spokes and the back of the rotor. In searching, I found this pair of Brembo 2 piston calibers off a Ducati s2r Monster 800 sportbike. They are designed to clear the rotor buttons, and I should have enough clearance on the back side.

The rotor came of a Ducati Monster 900s (or something like that). They have the same bolt pattern as an xs650, but have a larger diameter (320 mm) and less offset. Less offset is good for me, because I'll be running a narrow front end, so I need to buy space wherever I can.

I'd like to track down matching Ducati Brembo clutch and brake master cylinders for a reasonable price, but so far no luck.

These Ducati brake rotors are 320mm and have the same bolt pattern as an xs650. They have less offset than an xs650, which will work well for my needs, as I'm running a narrow front end. These 2 piston Ducati Brembo brake rotors should provide plenty of stopping power for my build.

I'm always so impressed when people do sketches of how they want their builds to look... so I thought I'd take a crack at it.

I was about halfway done when I remembered that I can't draw worth a damn.

Hahah, that's hilarious. Nice to know dain brammage is alive and well. Made my day. Thanx.

Wuz thinkin' that ya'll need some sort of 'insertable' engine pic, to stick into yer sketches.

Well, that didn't work out well.

Somehow, I've got the petcock in your backbone ...

I'm really digging your build, man! I did a much less elegant, chain driven Delco alternator mod with my bike. It was hard to find any references for doing it, so I just winged it. I can't wait to see your ride when she's finished. Cheers!

So this just happened yesterday... I had the honor of being picked to be a part of the 2016 Greasy Dozen Builder Collective. I'm beyond excited to have the support of a ton of amazing companies.

Hi Ranger,
like the joke punchline sez:- "That's what I want - - - Recognition!"
Congratulations!
So, apart from the Kudos, is there money in it?

There's a bunch of parts manufacturers that are supporting the event by giving gift cards/promo codes to the selected builders... it's not a chopoff or anything like that, just 12 guys picked to get the support of those vendors, and to help promote grassroots and garage motorcycle building.

Hi Ranger,
will the list see posts about it? Photos? Videos?
My vicarious participation is guaranteed.

I stopped by Great Western Metals in Houston the other day to buy some 3/8" 6061 aluminum to cut my sidecover out of... before I had left, they had talked me into letting them cut it, and for a total of $50 including materials, I didn't say no.

So I just got this in the mail today. My crazy idea is taking shape! I need to mill one small portion, and step-drill the back side of 2 of the holes for the locating pins, then it's good to go... Oh, and I'll also do some sort of finish on it. Maybe even engine turning.
