Yup! Same here, just dug up a photo from when I rebuilt the starter.

I find that to be very interesting.

OK, just for S&G's... I ran the numbers at Partzilla. They show all the starter gears as same part # and fitment the same for XS2 and up. So, apparently the starter gearing is the same.

Bob, when you get it running, it'd be interesting to compare decompression start to 2 cyl. start. If yours also starts easier on two.... you could just adjust the cable so that starter engages but decompress don't.

You are quite the sleuth Jim! Yeah , I think that would be an interesting experiment also!

Today’s episode, a couple more items knocked off of the to do list. Install the oil feed pipe on the front of the engine and the breather on the back of the head.
So here’s what I’m installing today.

Not rocket science, new gasket, new copper washers for the oil pipe, new copper washers for the breather cover ( not necessary but I had a bag full of cheap Chinese copper washers , so what the heck. )

Bonus round, 10 points to the person that can tell me what’s not correct in the photo of the breather. Test your XS knowledge!

Till next time,
Mailman out!

Lookin' good Bob!! You'll want to address this bit of interference before vibes get to it....

Tubes are either mild steel or brass. Can't remember which. At any rate... they'll "tweek" pretty easy. Try and get 1/16" - 1/8" clearance there.

Funny you should mention that. I was looking at that photo afterward and thought that looked kinda close. I’ll give that a closer look and make sure I have clearance.

My XS1 motor has JIS screws instead of bolts?

Mailman lets keep it correct.;)
I checked both of my 72s and they have allens. IMHO stainless would be acceptable. :bike:

Plus whats up with the green gasket showing. Hmmm

Oh you guys are close, but you’re focusing on details and missing the big picture. I’ll let this go a while and answer tonight. :D Unless of course somebody sees it.

Wrong angle on the tubes Yours are angled down a bit mine are straight out.

See below.

Both my tubes look to be level with each other.

Ding ding ding! We got a winner!
My original vent tubes were angled straight out, like this.

But one of the vent tubes was broken on the end, so I bought one that came off of a ‘73 TX650, and by then the tubes had been changed to a downward angle. You guys came up with some interesting comments about all the various types of screws and bolts. I still think Yamaha back in those days , played pretty fast and loose with the parts bins. no Allen bolts? No problem I’ll just grab some JIS screws or hex head bolts.

The vent tubes seemed to be in a constant transition. The one I like the best is a short stubby single that goes straight out.

Just a little note. Regarding the oil feed tube touching the rocker cover, I went into my photo archive and it was rubbing when I bought it. In fact it had made a little flat spot on the aluminum.
I took a flat blade screwdriver and gently pried up on it and now it has about 2mm clearance.
Good suggestion Jim.

Just to add to the discussion (confusion?). My 73TX has Allens on the breather. And the vent tubes are angled down as Bob's replacement.

Ya, did that Jim and there's more clearance on them. Just took some pics. Huh.
