Azallno, contact lens cleaner don't come in cans, it comes in bottles.
The item omitted from my toolkit was a can of Ignition points contact cleaner.
And yes, I do wear glasses. which affects how I ride in the rain.
Rain hits my helmet visor, peer through the raindrops until the visor mists over,
Flip visor up & peer under visor as rain hits glasses.
Peer through raindrops until glasses mist over.
Pull glasses down nose and squint between bottom of visor & top of glasses.
Ride on hard shoulder at 35 mph until the rain stops.

Haven't ride the bike in 2 days so it's been sitting. Just tried to start it and battery wasn't having it. Measured at 11.95V.
Brushes are also pretty worn. Probably 1/8" left on both

Between the slip rings I'm read about 5.9 ohms. It bounced around a while up to 12. I'll carry on testing and see what else I can gather
5.9Ω is a tad high, but that's much better than low. You can try cleaning up the rings to get a more consistent reading... but that's acceptable. If its not shorted on either ring it's prolly OK.... for now at least.
 
Would the discoloration on the slip rings have any affect on charging?
I believe it was 2many that dug into the science of slip rings, and found a thin SMOOTH layer of carbon from the brushes is actually the desired surface for best function. This layer is deposited by use, so once clean, the brushes will reform the carbon layer.
 
Back to the original question, one piece of wisdom that was passed to me for long trips; never wear a bag or backpack. Let the machine carry everything.
On spare cables, a buddy of mine turned me on to this; zip tie the spare routed along with the cable in use. Makes for much quicker changes and won’t take up valuable packing space.
Oh ya, always seek out friendly local knowledge too. That’s how you find the best places to eat/swimming holes and so on.

Yes - I support the notion of not carrying anything on your body (such as a backpack etc.). That is standard practice on bicycle touring as well - let the bike carry the stuff and avoid chaffing and a sweaty back.

In my experience, the cable most likely to fail on the XS650 is the clutch cable.

I inspect all of the cables regularly, and have never had an issue with the tach, speedo or throttle cable - but I did have a clutch cable break a few weeks ago. The only warning I got was a slightly "crunchy" sensation in the clutch pull for about a day before it let-go in my garage at the end of a ride.

The carbon buildup on your outer ring is uneven (red arrow). Leads me to believe the rotor was bent during a rewind. Further evidence is the epoxy "slop" on the 3G1 id mark and timing mark (yellow arrows). Yamaha (or Hitachi) weren't sloppy at all. Second pic is side by side of a sloppy rewind and an OEM.
Give us a side shot of the rotor so we can see the windings. 3rd pic shows the difference in windings.

Must be a rewind then. It does look like it's been replaced at some point in the last few years.
With the bike running at 3,000 rpms I'm only showing 12.3 on the battery. (Had it on trickle charger overnight) Jim's rotor looks like a worthy investment. I have not tested the stator, or reg/rec yet
** Correction- with the key off battery was showing 12.3. while running I was at 11.95

Yep. You got a (crappy) rewind. With the irregular wear on the outer slip ring, I can guarantee they bent it pressing it back together. I'll save you the cost of shipping... it won't pass my core runout test.
Back to your problem.... there's a good chance the outer brush is skipping on the ring... and losing contact. Could that be causing you problem? I'll be honest, I have no idea. Anyone else here have a similar situation? Seems to me that with the coil energizing and de-energizing every revolution, it'd confuse the h*ll out of the regulator... but I really don't know.
I was gonna PM you about the rotor but decided in the interest of full disclosure, I'll put this out in the forums for all to see.
I screwed up building this rotor. Over 50 rotors now and this is the first... :(

Resistance test: Good. 5.2Ω 'tween the rings and open to case.

Runout test: Good. .003" side to side and .002" on the face.
Balance check: Good. Balance is hands down the best I've seen yet. :smoke:

Alignment check: F*ck me. :yikes: I clocked it wrong. :shootme: It's somewhere between 1.5 and 2° off (advanced).

So here's the deal... this rotor will work just fine, however.... you're gonna have to put a timing light on the bike and retard your trigger about 2° That will require a timing light but it's easily doable. I'll even give you my phone # and walk you through it if you need the help.
So here we are... your choice: You can use this one and I'll give you a decent discount off the $130 original price. Hows a hundred bucks and shipping sound?
Or you can take door number 2 and I'll rewind another one for you. You can let me know here or in a PM.

I put this out there 'cause I didn't want to be accused in the future of passing off shoddy workmanship. Good reputations are are hard earned.. but easily lost. I'd just as soon keep mine... even if it does mean a little egg on my face in the public square.:rolleyes:

Stator and rectifier check out ok.
It looks like the stator was installed cocked at one point, creating that wear ring on rotor and stator.
That's a hell of a deal Jim. But how does one retard the pickup if it is on there with peened head screws?
